Just saying BMW alone sounds too pretentious to me, IMO. A lot of people in Nor-cal are ignorant to the price of cars, and if you say just BMW they think like 5/6/7 series and SUPER expensive, so I try to steer away from that and let em know it's a lowly(in BMW terms) 3 series.

If it’s a normal person that probably knows nothing about cars I say: 2020 beamer or bmw because I don’t want them thinking it’s an old Bmw.
If it’s a car person or they know somewhat about cars I say m3 cause they prob never heard of m340 lol

I usually say "A plug-in hybrid" if they aren't a car person. Keeps them from asking too many questions. If they are a car person I say "BMW 530e" and if they press for it I'll share the year.

I find that BMW draws more attention than my Mercedes did and I'm not sure why that's the case. I try to fly a little below the radar.

I just recently bought my first BMW and have not had to answer this question since, but normally it is followed with a pause while I think about the audience and determine which car I want to let them know I own.
If I do go with the BMW I will probably just say a 3-series, as I feel people have a stigma toward BMW owners.

I mention the year first like, I'd say, a 2007 BMW (530i) or a 2012 BMW (X5M) oe a 2002 Mercedes (E55)...

By mentioning the year, it tells them Oh, he drives an old car, problem solved

Yes small BMW as well. Most non-car people have no idea the model lineup of BMW or any other luxury car maker (Porsche, Audi, Benz, etc). They tend to only know common vehicles like a Honda Accord.
