So. My buddy, his kid (my more-or-less-nephew), my wife and I all went skiing/boarding today.
My buddy drove us in his Cybertruck from Denver to Vail and return. Honestly? It still looks *horrible* to my eyes, but after spending more than a few hours trapped in traffic in it, I have to admit that the technology is pretty damn impressive. Not ~$100k impressive, but impressive all the same. Would I ever own one? Not in a million years. Am I impressed with it? Yes. It's pretty amazing how Tesla's managed to get a ~6000 lb. behemoth to more or less violate the laws of physics. One thing? The rear seats are ABSOLUTE TORTURE DEVICES. They suck donkey balls. It would help if they could be reclined a bit, but they're at about an 80-degree angle and are terribly unforgiving of anything more than about 20 minutes of use. The front? Fine. Great. Comfy. The rears? Throw a member of the Taliban back there an in 45 minutes he'll tell you anything you want to know. I had to come home and take a hot shower to get the kinks out of my back. Oh-- and watching the range decrease to lower and lower numbers as we were stuck in traffic west of the Eisenhower tower? Not a lot of fun when you're tired and achey-- we weren't sure he'd have enough juice to drop my wife and I off and then get home. He made it..... at 10% reserve. He told me this morning that it took nine hours (!) in his garage to charge from 10% to 80%. R.

As we have all witnessed, car lovers with IC transportation used to bow at the alter of acceleration, now with the advent of EV tech, they have all but given up on being top of that heap. Handling has become the new focus, but when new tech brings down the weight of EVs, that may also fall to the wayside. The only thing left will be to worship the noise and vibration, lol.

The truck just feels sort of, almost..... nimble? I don't know how to explain it otherwise. You're sitting there thinking that it's going to handle like a drunken elephant, and all of a sudden it feels a lot smaller and lighter than it really is. It sort of catches you off guard the first time you drive it. Yes, it's an illusion (mass is mass after all), but whatever engineering/software combination that some nameless (NDA'd to the nine's) Tesla design team came up with-- it's damn good. That being said, I still think the Cybertruck is a one-trick pony that won't age well. The stainless looks "ugh" even when freshly cleaned (my buddy is debating about polishing it..... um, no), the panel fit and finish look like they belong on a kit car, the goofball steering wheel is a complete and utter design fail, and obviously its looks are..... polarizing, to say the least. BUT..... the lessons learned from the design and manufacture of it will probably be pretty valuable to Tesla going forward. I won't be all that surprised if it gets killed off in the fairly near future though. R.

I understand why Tesla went after the light duty pickup truck market since it's a huge part of US market sales, but the Cybertruck was a bit over the top in its ethstetics design and execution. It costs too much for traditional buyers to change over to it in mass. Ford's electric F150 is not a leap to electric like the Cybertruck is. Ford sits good with its truck. It's loyal followers know what to expect if they switch from their well-known ICE F150 platform. New 1st-time truck buyers who want to own EV are going to the No. 1 light pickup truck manufacturer, which has a great track record. Win-win.

Well the Cybertruck is technically just about every man’s junk, not just one man’s.

Not at all a fan of the Cyber Truck but agree. Apparently street cred on the internetz trumps all, though. Of course, a shovel hook and overhand right beat interwebz street cred but I guess they won't show that part in case it hurts anyone's feelings.
Back on topic: 1. Saw yet another Cyber Truck over the weekend. Some of the panels appeared to vibrate (given the shimmer of the reflection). I would've thought that was normal for it but not all the panels did it so. Had to pull around to both sides to confirm. Road was equally crappy the whole and speed was constant so it wasn't just a rough spot in the road when I noticed it. 2. TX, you'd get a kick out of r/cyberstuck.

I've come around on it. They look really cool in person. Not objectively good design, but they have presence and an attitude about them.

People who see them and get mad are just miserable people. Why you can't look at it and find joy in the idea that such a thing exists is completely beyond me. |

The pick up truck had like the same design for over 70 years so that's one of the reasons why it looks polarizing -- he wanted it to look the future lol. But the engineering of it is finally something moving forward -- the 48V system which a lot of auto makers have been trying to move towards but can't be due to manufacturing constraints of cost and engineering and getting your supplier on board. We're already at Throttle-by-wire, some are at Brake-By-Wire, and now we want to move towards Steer-By-wire (which is not new tech since it's been on planes since idk the 80s?).

Tesla's FSD is seemingly falling behind. Way behind. Consumer Reports ranking it 8th.
A good read on the CT 48v low voltage architecture. https://www.motor1.com/features/7048...ruck-48-volts/ Tesla had the advantage of no competition for a while. And buyers willing to pay a lofty premium for uniqueness. Remaining profitable and competitive against experienced manufacturers will be the true test. Polarizing designs do not necessarily sell cars in volume. There are strong indications that Cybertruck sales have come from buyers who would otherwise have bought different Tesla models - cannibalized sales.

In a world of soul-less NPC blob CUVs, Cybertruck is a welcome addition. It's a passion project.
