Happy VD (Valentine's Day). Spread the Joy-2020!!

Once again, fellow OT denizens, it's that time of year! HAPPY VD TO ALL...SPREAD THE JOY TO EVERYONE!!

For many years I've attempted to truncate the term, Happy Valentine's Day, to "Happy VD". This effort has had mixed efforts as most people don't take it seriously when it is, indeed, an attempt to make it easier for everyone to spread the joy and happiness of VD, regardless of sex or gender. For example, would you say Happy Valentines's day to your brother? Of course not!! But you will definitely say Happy VD! Why...because it allows you to recognize a holiday based on love without being awkward.

I'm doing this a little early this year because I believe my efforts have fallen short in terms of reach and depth.

Can I get everyone in OT to start using Happy VD? Let's begin the revolution here!!

HAPPY VD Everyone!! Let's spread the joy!!

I call it the Hallmark holiday. Is this the place where we give ideas so others don't have to think too hard?

Don’t prefer buying into this. Seems silly that it’s the one day a year people choose to show their love to one another. I would just send flowers because it’s a Tuesday and not because it’s V Day. Also, I’m single so it’s really Happy Singles Day. Hehe

Agree. I would rather get flowers for no reason, than getting flowers because someone feels obligated due to the "Holiday".

Show me you love me everyday with how you treat me. I would rather the actions than the flowers.

Yes. Always get a card, and hand write a note inside. She will remember the note in the card more than the dinner.

Valentine's Day is such a minefield. It doesn't mean shit to me, but my most recent ex-gf expected some sort of date planned by me, or perhaps a special homemade dinner, and probably a card and a small gift of some sort. She never got any of those things from her ex-husband, and since I was put on this earth with no other purpose than to correct everything that had been wrong with her marriage, I was expected to spring into action. So I was stuck; either I refused to recognize what I think is a bullshit Hallmark revenue grab and be told what a cold-hearted asshole I was, or I went along with the bullshit and felt like a chump.

I'm a lucky man, my current wife (she loves it when I call her that or my ex girlfriend) and I don't exchange gifts or cards for VD. I bring her flowers once and a while for no reason and that means more than acknowledging the Hallmark shit. We don't really exchange christmas presents either, we live a good life and are blessed with more than most. We will often go out for one another's birthday though.

Shit....looks like I need to go buy a card.

The girlfriend is getting some sexy ass PJ's (It's good for both of us) and a necklace that has a small trinket bottle of arsenic (We're both a little on the dark side).

I don't really mind putting in the effort on Valentines Day. Is what it is, if she's happy I'm happy. Although I feel that there would be less pressure/expectation if social media didn't exist. I ended up getting her a gift, and we have reservations downtown for Friday. I know that flowers will put a smile on her face, but debating if I want to blow another $100. The fiance says she doesn't want anything, and we can just stay in and watch a movie. I'm 100% certain that this is a trap. She may say that, hell she may even feel that way, but when she sees her coworkers/family/friends posting shit on FB/instagram/etc that feeling with slowly dwindle. Plus it's on a Friday this year, so we would have probably went out to eat or something anyway.

Could be a trap, maybe you need to talk to her about that. I frankly hate the peer pressure, it becomes like weddings where you have to measure up to someone else's big day. It really takes the honesty out of it if you think about it. So you go out and try to make the day more special or at least as special as all the other BS Social Media posts.....so is it really about how you feel or keeping up with the Jones'.

I like to use honesty in my relationship. Back in the day, I could see dinner and flowers or what ever for VD. Now, because of the Hallmark pressure it has morphed into some grandiose competition which also sets up the disappointment.

I say show up with flowers and a bottle of wine or champagne every few weeks. Leave a hand written note for no reason and I think you'll have a happier GF/wife and if the whole social media thing matters to her she'll post that up and her friends will envious of her and you'll be the hero.

But what do I know, I'm on my 3rd marriage.....

Ahhh, come on Doc. How hard is it to buy a card? You still have 4 days. Or is it the point in the relationship where it's hard to find a card that fits? Most cards are too "I love you" kind of stuff?

You can just get a blank card and write something yourself that fits the stage of your relationship. Hey, use my line....I have a Heart On for you today. Done.

You're welcome.

Stay away.... I refuse to go out on Valentine's Day. Over priced, packed, and service winds up sucking.

Thanks for everyone chiming in and I see a few utilizations of Happy VD in the responses. This is good. Very good.

As far as plans, I'd listen to our resident expert... cmyx6go on what to do. Anything we, as stupid men, come up with will be woefully inadequate. Listen to the guru here. Ask her. Do it.

This is the way.

Haha I already talked to her about it. We are very honest with each other, if something is wrong we always hash it out right there and then. So that is never the issue. Nor is VD itself. Only problem I'm having is the flowers debate. Don't even want to start on the wedding subject lol, my bank account is currently in tears.
