In-ground, pop-up sprinkler head? Haven't done it myself (yet) but doesn't look too bad. Lots of YouTube videos on it. Dig, remove, extract, insert, adjust, replace dirt/grass.

So this is something I've been interested in trying for years! I recently opened a rather large fruit and the seed was already cracked and sprouting! Which if you've read up on these, that's one of the most difficult tasks. So I decided to clean it off and Transplant it into a starter pot. I already know it may never yield Fruit. But it still makes for a really nice Houseplant. ���� Stay tuned...

My very first Redbud that I planted last Summer (which was already bad timing) also survived that Antarctic Blast and is now budding and doing lovely. 🤗

i do know is that i have to replace few, when the inspector turned on sprinkler system. Few heads didnt pop up, more like low pressure fountain lol

Sprouting is the easy part. When you try to transplant, and hope the roots don't die off, now THAT is tough. I think it took me literally a dozen trees, of varying degrees of maturity, before I got one to reach the point of actually producing fruit. I'd go out, notice suddenly all the leaves were gone on a tree, and with a slight pull on the trunk the whole tree came out of the ground.

The trick, I learned from a local with a bunch of fruit-producing trees, was a rusty nail driven into the trunk.

You might just be missing nozzles or a head is stuck under the grass. Look for pooling where heads may be stuck. If one is up try steping on it rapidly, this spikes pressure along the line.

If a head is broken but not at the base it will just unscrew, very easy takes me 3 mins to do an entire swap out. If the head is over 6 inches tall it may be side entry which isn't as easy. In that case dig the head up and around it to allow the head to be able to come completely out of the ground. Be very careful not to pull too hard or you'll break the swing fitting. Then spin off and the new one back on. Hardest part for homeowners is adjusting the head afterwards.

Or the easiest step is just call an irrigation contractor. I charge between $46-58 per head replaced, labor and parts plus service call of between $45 and $90. If a lot of heads need replaced I waive the service call. Just so you know what it may cost.

But I've read up plenty and we'll see. The thing is, the chances of it actually producing fruit is slim to none.
I'm doing it more for a nice attractive Houseplant.

good to know. looking to upgrade the heads and sprinkler box with valves.
one estimate came back $3500 new heads, lines and valves. (verbal)
no idea how much piping is involve, how much valves and heads are.

Lines shouldn't need to be replaced. We do system renovations as well and I've never seen one needing that as long as it's pvc or poly. I charge $250 per valve replaced. $3500 sounds like it could be reasonable depending on system size, types and number of heads plus quantity of valves. Takes about one day to do. I had to replace all valves at a house last year. Took 7 hours, cost $2,300, replaced 7 heads and 7 valves. I don't recommend replacing valves yourself. You could do the heads which would save you some money and just pay them do the head adjustments and valves.

I trimmed back around 60 tallgrasses and 12-ish carex today. I bought a pair of grass scissors for that. The deed is done but, damn, factory sharp isn't on par w/ how sharp I like to keep edged tools. I might look into a sickle or a scythe for next year. lol

it's been known bro that if you put rusty nails in the dirt the acidity goes up. so if i want my hydrangeas to turn blue instead of buying acidity amendments i can throw some rusty nails in the soil

on that note i can't even put my pre emergent down because were suppose to get several days of rain and if i put the pre emergent down it could wash away

just spent the afternoon taking the lawn down to 2" to get rid of the dead grass. used my lawn sweeper to pick everything up. if it doesn't rain tomorrow i'm gonna dethatch the lawn. suppose to rain the next day so i'll wait before i aerate than throw down my pre emergent. Springs is so close but knock on wood i'm expecting at least one more snow dump on us

Our03Z4 quick question.

I have a landscaper who handles the whole years but I still do so small projects and check some stuff. For example if I see a brown spot I’ll add some tine to that zone. I’m thinking about installing a Ratchio sprinkler clock so I can change setting on my phone. It should make it easy to check heads and coverage without running back to the clock.

Any suggestions ?

Personally I prefer the Hunter Hydrawise, it's actually the only controller we install currently. I'm actually a certified Rachio installer but only install them if forced. For a contractor the Hydrawise is the best choice for numerous reasons, easy install and also has a color touch screen for if you don't have a phone handy. Plus their tech support is US based and the best in the industry. RainBird has tried to get with the times but their controller is a joke compared to others.

All in all if it will just be you using the controller the Rachio will be fine, but if you have a contractor that ever needs access then you're better off with the Hydrawise. I honestly don't understand the draw for everyone wanting the Rachio.
