As stupid as he was, still takes an astronomical amount of core strength and joint and lower back stability to even perform the step back with that much weight. Otherwise total fail. Backloaded squats as a whole are disasters for the body. |

I actually do front rack holds with heavy weight just to acclimate my body to heavier poundage (for front squats). I will get into the front rack position, stand the weight up then take a step back, hold for 3-5 seconds then rerack. His whole bouncing is unnecessary and will eventually lead to problems or an injury. Especially with those pipe cleaners for legs....haaaaaaa |

You would've died seeing this guy that would come in the gym about 12yrs ago.... He was a collegiate high jump coach for U of Houston, and would load the Smith machine with 335 and use his 2-3in block as his step.... He would do it with only one leg as an explosive step up to increase vertical acceleration. He was a tad shorter than the brother in the video, but roughly same size stilts.... I asked him one day "why don't you train both legs just to keep it equal?", his response "it doesn't help me jump any higher and the added muscle on that side would weigh me down..." I died and walked away! Being 6'5" myself and having a torso that measures 20" from bottom of run cage to top of hip bone, combined with having a crooked rib cage from birth, and stupidly flat feet, I prefer DL over squats, and when I do squat I keep it in front to avoid excessive torso rotation from my fucked up ribcage. I've never used a SBB, but have thought about buying one for my training studio. In your opinion, worth it? I usually try to keep squats to only 315 for sera of 5x12 focusing on volume as I had a hernia surgery from when I was a fat kid back when I was 16. Having that mesh rip or have a hernia again scares the shit out of me since I mentally couldn't bring my self to train legs for 2 years after, and from the moment I had surgery to 2 weeks after I lost 12lbs of muscle from the atrophy and shock to my system. Fuck that! |
