No crabs are supposedly coral safe, but the fish store people tell you anything. We have some hitchiker crabs that we haven't been able to get out and they aren't very big but one hurt a piece of coral we bought-a xenia.

you're not talking about hermits with shells are you? those are safe for anything but the kind of crabs without the shells are not.

longtran, i think you might have gotten an emerald crab. they are not always reef safe...as long as it has algae to feed off of, you should be fine.

Yeah any crab that doesn't have a shell is no good. Right now he'd probably be great to clean up the algae but you don't want to risk it and they're suckers to try to get out so get him while you can still find him.

Oh, that stinks, yeah we have one in our tank, not like that a different kind, that hurt one of our corals but we can't get it out.

yep, that is an emerald crab. i have one and it hasn't been a menace yet in my reef, but i would keep an eye on it after you add your corals.

pistol shrimps make these annoying clicking sounds and they like to redo your landscaping.

Ha ha! Actually, I've never seen the movie, but everyone always likes that one the best. He's been in there the longest, almost a year. The angel died since I took that pic, and so has the sunflower coral. I'm THINKING about converting to a fish-only and putting coral skeletons in. I haven't decided yet...but what's throwing me off is all the other corals are doing awesome, and they're actually spreading to different parts of the tank. Since that last pic, I have chopped up those big rocks into smaller ones (so they don't look like they came from my driveway anymore ) but it's strange. I'll monitor it for a few more months to see what I want to do. It could be that some of the corals I first put in and died were just sick or in bad shape from the beginning |

Now I'm trying them a second time and they're doing better than any other coral in the tank! There were three coral "blossoms" of xenia on the piece of coral when I got it. Now there are close to 15 on the coral, and they are spreading to rocks all around them. Actually, I've got to post a new pic because as I look at that one now, nothing is the same. I've got really bad algae on my overflow box, so I'll clean it up tomorrow and then I'll try and post some pics. It's going to be quite a before and after pic I think... |

And sorry to hear about the angel and the sunflower coral. I wouldn't comment anything else on this since I don't know jack about fish tanks. All I remember is that my parents used to have one when I was young, and it was really cool watching them fight.
