If you’re buying a car for it’s software you’re not buying a car, you’re buying a computer that happens to move.
I’m not trying to sound like a tough guy here… but who gives a damn? 8, 8.5, 9… are we that stupid now that we can’t figure out how to get to the grocery store without an assistant? |

Your underlying point is valid - which if I had to summarize: “drive the car, regardless of the software” or perhaps “what difference does it make” or maybe “don’t buy a car for its software”… But then, what’s the point of having a forum like this to debate such things? |

I personally would like to have the latest of everything at the time of purchase and hope that it is current for at least a couple of years.
I hate that something gets updated within 12 months of purchase. However I bought the M340i for the engine so I may get over it! |

Anyone want a good laugh? Go read the new “panoramic HUD display” press release from BMW and come back and read the iDrive 9 press release. They can’t get their story straight. They are in complete contradiction to each other.
From the iDrive 9 press release: “After about 20 years, the digital user experience is dominated by touchpads, touch-sensitive smartphone displays and voice assistants. Swiping, tapping and speaking are the most common methods of interaction. The BMW Curved Display’s touchscreen functionality and dialogue using natural language represent the contemporary form of interaction between human and vehicle.” From the HUD press release: “We are taking our proven “eyes on the road – hands on the wheel slogan to a new level.” So, which is it? Do you embrace eyes-on-the-road and “hands on the wheel”, or do you want touchscreens everywhere? You can’t have both. |

BMW Updates iDrive (to 8.5) For All Current Models Ahead Of Switch To Android Platfor
All models that are currently fitted with the BMW Operating System 8 will get the improved 8.5 version in 2023. The first ones to benefit from the upgrade will be the 7 Series, iX, i4, X5, X6, X7, and XM starting in July, with more models to follow.

I’m still confused about the iDrive systems after reading this forum…
I literally JUST ordered an 2024 X5 50e. MY concern is if I resell it or trade it in, it will have an outdated iDrive OS. It seems iDrive 9 WILL require a hardware update, not just software. My SA associate said otherwise, but he has no reason to research it further. It seems plausible to go from 8.5 to 9 should require a screen change or otherwise. Can you go from Linux to Android based w/o changing the screen? |

Fingers crossed this is true. iDrive 8 is so new it seems absolutely silly to segment all these different versions.

"Improved" = more buggy bloatware.

iDrive 7 is the best classic system with all the buttons, knobs, and CarPlay integration.
iDrive 8, 8.5, 9 are just BMW trying to be futuristic, and save money on the buttons and knobs. They ultimately are not good at software, UI, or natural language processing. I don't care about BMW's nav and entertainment software at all. The future is just CarPlay and Android Auto that will update every year with your new phones. BMW should do what they do best, make a car with a screen and HVAC controls, and just let Apple and Google work out the software. |

............ PS - On March 30, 1836, the small garrison under Moseley Baker remaining at San Felipe to defend the Brazos crossing ordered the town evacuated and then burned it to the ground to keep it from falling into the hands of the advancing Mexican army.

Dad bought a house on South Drive. $24,500 bucks in 76. There was no Hulen Mall in 1976. South Drive dead ended with a big metal guard rail. Hulen was a two lane road. South of the 820 Loop. There was a farm house with a grain silo with a 84 Lumber at the corner of Granbury @Hulen. Of course there has been alot of change over the years. Dad is 89, retired Air Force, VAFB-Minutemen III missiles/over 250 monitored environmentals CES piped Nitrogen etc. It was all analog componetry in the nosecone. You had to keep it cool, etc. 89 years old and still kickin'. Then Hahn AB the F4 Phantom gig... Was building AM/SW/LW radios back at VAFB. 68 to 72. Maybe I am just getting too damn old for all the electronics anymore! They need a school at BMW dealers with a course instructor to finger all this stuff out!

I have been following BMW as a brand for a long time, but we never owned one, until now, when we placed an order for X3. We were planning to get X3 for the last 1-2 years, but the parts shortages put that idea on the back burner. We finally feel that we got a decent spec for the money. Since this is going to be a car for my wife, I was also very concerned with X3 receiving iDrive8 as we both agreed that we dont want that.
In a year or so I will also be in a market for a new car and I was hoping to get 3 series sedan or 4 series gran coupe, but it looks like I will need to resort to used inventory as both of these models got destroyed by iDrive8. I really hope that BMW cycles back to button in the near future as I can't stand this all screen stupid design. |

For me though, I cant live without apple carplay. My entire days schedule pulled up on my dash, automatically routes to my next appointments and figures out traffic, messages and all the calendar events syncing. That computer that happens to move is also in my pocket and moves around with me. It carries my livelihood and its been adapted to wheels already. But to your point of idrive 8.5 vs 9, what difference does it make? Most of us just use carplay/android auto anyway... |
