OP: Find a nice house out in Orinda or Dublin and call it a day. Take the BART to work and you are good to go. I did that for several years.

Rent should not be over $2500 a month ANYWHERE in the Bay Area. I dont care who you are or what you think. Its not worth it, period.

The fact that so many folks jack up the rent is ridiculous. I saw some jackass charging $3000 for a home in the Bay Area and his actual mortgage was $1100. So in reality rent should be at the most $1500. God damn crooks and yet people still pay it.

Now I want to let some of you folks in on some things that are known but often missed.

An exgf of mine was renting a 6500 sq ft (yes 6500 sq ft) home in Longview Washington in the mountains for $1395 a month. The home was amazing and this same home some yahoo in the Bay Area would easily charge $5 million. So look at other coastal areas and dont settle.

I am considering a 5000 sq ft home in the same area. To me I will put up with the 6 months of rain. The good thing is it does not get as cold as Alaska or Maine so I am all set...

Everyone and their mom tells stories about how you can buy/rent a mansion in BumFuck, U.S.A for pennies. We know. No "yahoo in the Bay Area" charges anything they want. It's strictly dictated by the market. You shouldn't have skipped out on econ class.

The price of housing is as closely related to supply and demand as it gets. Wanna know the reason you can rent a 6500 sq ft home in Longview Washington in the mountains for $1395 a month? Because every morning when you wake up, you're in Longview, Washington. If more people cared about Longview, Washington, the price would would be similar to here.

Yeah ok kid. Facts are facts whether you want to believe them or not. I dont give a shit. You want pictures?

Damn trolls...

There is absolutely nothing wrong with Washington state. Have you ever lived there? Nope, probably not and are a one state boy. I suggest/recommend you get out and experience other states. We have 50 of them by the way.

Oh, and last time I looked Seattle Washington, Longview Washington or Bellevue Washington is not in bumfuck as you say. Another roll your eyes comment.

Move along kid.

I wont waste another minute arguing with fact.

Good day..

His point about the market is true, I'm not sure why you would discount it.

The fact is, the market dictates prices, and it's been a fact for many decades that desirable areas of Los Angeles, San Francisco, and New York will simply never be as cheap as places like "Longview, Washington", and it's not because the SF Bay Area is full of crooks.

I'm sure Longview is a wonderful city to live, and there's nothing wrong with wanting to live there, but to say that "some yahoo" in SF charging $3,000 a month for rent is a "crook" when a rental home should only rent for $1500 is completely ignorant of how the rental market actually works, and personally insulting to me, as someone who owns properties in the SF Bay Area.

I don't consider myself a crook, or a swindler, I am simply providing a a good/service for a price that the market will bear, this is capitalism at its base.

Ask yourself, if you had unsolicited offers to rent your home in Longview, Washington for $3,500 a month, would you rent it for only $1,500 because you didn't want to be a "crook"?

If you can honestly answer that question, you will see why your post is was slightly offensive.

I think you misunderstood what he meant when he said that. "BFE" wasn't meant to degrade your location in particular, but the fact that it is quite a distance from San Fran. There are different demographics, and a different market for any and every section of every state. While Washington may be a beautiful place to live, a lot of people find that just the weather alone is enough for them to fork over extra $$ to live in an area like San Fran where they don't have to deal with rain for 6 months out of a year.

A house in West Bloomfield may run $1.2m, but if that same house was planted in an area with greater population density and greater average income per citizen, like SF, I wouldn't expect any less than that number to double. Like everyone has said, it's supply and demand and the means of the market.

As much as I love the Bay, there are too many ppl that think the same way as the commenter you just commented about. I found Seattle to have many of the things that make the Bay area so great without so many of the smug ppl.

Someone got offended...

OP wants to move to SF, or possibly Bay Area.

The fact that all other states besides CA and NY are cheaper to live in is irrelevant to this thread.

Hahaha I actually live in San Ramon and I love it. I just suggested those places because its seems that most of my Genetech coworkers live there and don't mind it. East of tunnel is great. Especially for families, but OP isn't thinking that far ahead

Surprising amount of biotech ppl live in the east bay. I also work in ssf, and the commute from san francisco is too perfect for me to move away.

Gosh I miss the Bay Area...the diversity, the food, proximity to wine country....

I worked in downtown SF and thankfully my company paid for the valet parking in my building. $550 a month for parking is indeed insane.

I moved to San Diego since the weather is perfect here and Bay Area is just a 1.5 hour flight away. My two bedroom condo in the Peninsula cost the same as a 4 bedroom house here haha...

I used to live in the midwest and east coast too. The only places I would consider moving to are Hawaii and the vineyards of Italy. But California is pretty awesome!

Geez, parking in my office building in Arlington, VA is $160/mo and I don't wanna pay it... suddenly, I feel a little better. Paying $4-500/mo for parking AT WORK is literally retarded.

You're in tech so all the tech companies are close by downtown, either near Embarcadero or SOMA/South Beach, so expect the cost of parking to be similar.

SF and Menlo Park are about 30 miles apart. Without any traffic at all, it's a hair over 30 mins to drive. During commute times, expect 90 minutes or more. The Peninsula is very easy to navigate with two main freeways running north/south and three highways connecting them from east/west every 10 miles or so. Highway 101 is hell during commute as it runs along all the major corporations up and down the Peninsula and SFO airport. The other freeway, 280, is more scenic which runs along the east side of the coastal mountains, rarely ever has traffic (between San Bruno and Los Altos) aside from peak commute time, but isn't as efficient distance wise.
This is where I live now and I love it. By living right outside the city you get to enjoy the area without worrying about the constant assault on your car and the super high housing costs.

I live in SF, and my car doesn't have any bumper scratches from parking, but I also rarely park in downtown. I just take public transportation down there when I go.
This is where I lived before. If it's anything like it was 10 years ago, it's great. Really nice area.

Well - I know this is an old thread - but it looks like this is about to become reality.

Flying out to SF next Thursday for an on-site interview. Don't want to put the cart before the horse but I'm suspecting if they are spending money on flying me out there it is likely there is good potential.

That said - I need to figure out where to live! The job is actually going to be in Emeryville. Any suggestions on good places to be that aren't too far? I'm okay with a commute of up to around 30 minutes or so if needed.
