I'm paranoid as all heck. I've got a 2TB RAID mirrored drive hooked up via USB to my MacBook Pro that acts as my TimeMachine Drive. I have another 2TB RAID mirrored drive hooked up via FireWire that acts as my drive that holds all my home movies and main Aperture library and Vaults.

The Aperture library that I have as my default library on my MBP only contains pictures and movies from my camera from 2011. That library gets backed up on TimeMachine as well as the 2011 Vault. When I switch to the Main Aperture Library, I also back it up to the Main Aperture Vault. Granted, they are both on the same 2TB Mirrored RAID drive, but if one file were to get corrupted, I still have the other file available.

I'm so paranoid of drive failure, I swapped out my HD from my MBP to a 256GB SSD. So now, not only do I have speed, but less chance of mechanical failure. When I leave the house, the MBP goes with me, leaving the external RAID drives behind. When I come back home, I just hook everything back up to my laptop and back everything up.

I'm sure there are more careful people out there that have a huge RAID box with more than just two drives in them.

I recently bought a sweet higher-end NAS for backups of various things (including my photo libraries). I found it by chance for like 60% off at Micro Center, and I think it was a price-mistake that they didn't realize.

After buying the HDs, I now have ~6.5 tb of available storage in RAID 5, and a peace of mind.

Got my 430 EX II today. Lots to learn about flash photography. It's come a long way since the flash days of old, though. I'm really surprised how quickly the flash is ready after a shot. And it's powerful as hell. I set it to full power and full zoom and completely washed out my dark kitchen from my easy chair 50ft away in the living room.

I've got my funky set up only because my first RAID enclosure i had to return for a replacement. While waiting for my replacement, I bought another enclosure. When the other enclosure came back, I got two more drives and hence this my current set up.

A NAS drive in RAID 5 is a sweet set up. Much better protection than my simple Mirrored drive set up. It's actually the set up I first considered but wanted to go the cheap way but eventually ended up spending as much cash. Probably one of these days, costs will be so low and bandwidth much faster that most people will just back everything up on a cloud instead of having to set up their own back up systems.

So I got rid of my Tokina 11-16mm and my Tamron 18-200 and got every single cent of my money back, mainly due to the resale value and availability of the Tokina. I'm now a couple of hundred dollars closer to a 70-200 f4L...I'm not sure if you guys recall me asking if it's worth the price to get the IS. I decided to just save some more and get it, probably at the end of the month.

Next question: I don't have a preferrence when it comes to shooting. I bring my camera everywhere and shoot everything. I like the AF points and speed of the 7D but would like the full frame and low light capabilities of the 5Dii. I'm not sure if Canon will release an MKiii soon, and if it will have the processor that the 7D has. At $900 difference, would it be better just to wait and see what Canon releases?

What do you like to shoot? The 7D and 5D2 are totally different animals and the choice is dependent on what you want to do.

I use my 7D for wildlife and sports and the 5D2 for everything else, including scenics, portraits, street shooting, night shooting, archetectural, etc.

anything you hear about mkIII is really still just speculation at this point. The F4 would be more effective on a full frame camera as it would appear to have a better DOF due to the nature of the cropping. so together they would be nice.

The 7D is very capable with it's ISO handling, just not as far along as the 5D mkII obviously, but it comes down to how you need to use the camera. The 7D actually shoots a sharper/cleaner image. but it does sacrifice as ISO goes up. Playing with noise reduction in things like lightroom make a huge difference though. I was just comparing some images shot with both my 7D and 5DII at about 1000 ISO, and their really isn't much of a difference, and when run through noise reduction, they react the same.

As for choosing between the IS and non IS, the main difference is, one way you pretty much always have to be leaning against a wall, a railing, or using a tripod. The other, hand held at 1/60th of a second at full zoom is possible. Pushing it a bit at 1/40th. That being said, on the 70-200 series lenses with the modern IS, it is by far the best IS i've used yet, and it's amaizing how stable it gets.

my vote is for IS, and i just grabbed the 70-200 F2.8 to replace my F4 with image stabelizing, and i wouldn't think twice about the other ones without IS

your capture rate just goes through the roof, so you'll end up with more pictures that work all the time.

I really don't have a preference? I shoot what's available to me...but the way you narrowed it down, it looks like I might be swaying to the 5D direction. However, my son will be taking sports next season so I kinda wanted to future proof myself. These bad boys are not cheap so if I buy one now it's going to be with me for a very long while.

I did a fair amount of sport with my 5DmkII, it has a tiny bit more shutter lag then the 7D does, but it is still very capable. The main difference is, you're depending on your abilities as a photographer to get the shot rather then just machine gunning the shot and hoping for the best. My capture rate is pretty much the same on both cameras when shooting the same type of sports.

if i had a friend with me, i would hand them the 7D as it would increase their capture rate, but since i was used to the speed of the 5DII i would get just as many usable shots as them. So it comes down to practice mostly.

Now when i shoot sports with the 7D, i still try to get the one shot and not rapid fire it, i do leave the high speed shutter engaged so that if i do miss my timing, i do have the potential to still capture it, but it really comes down to timing, and that's it.

on a side note in favor of the 7D, you can attach more lenses to it then you can with the full frame bodies. which is a pretty big bonus in some peoples eyes.

the 7D can also remotely trigger flashes that are off the camera, which has proven pretty fun.

only concern is warranty... but a nice way around that is to buy insurance. which when you get to that price of a camera, it's better to just get insurance anyhow.

It's a pretty solid body, and there are a few people on here who would definitely pick up a refurbed item without thinking twice. when a company does a refurb, it likely means that it was a test camera in a store, which was sent back in after a time to be cleaned, recalibrated, gone over with a fine toothed come, and repackaged to put on sale again. It will be less likely to be defective then a brand new one out of the box.
