I don't know what awards shows you've watched in the past but the comedy bits are normal. They're all hosted by comedians - you think they hire comedians to be somber and serious? So using your analogy on the most of the world just accepting it but "we're only human" - when they teased michael j fox at the Oscars one year for having Parkinson's or the year they teased Christopher Reeves, I guess their spouses would've been justified to pull out a rocket launcher because those insults to me sound a lot more heinous.

It's also the Oscars. Unfortunately, one or if not the most prestigious award shows. It goes against EVERYTHING the academy and the board represent and their image is everything.

Will Smith didn't do what he did to defend Jada's honor. He did it for himself.

"Keep MY WIFE'S name out yo fuckin' mouth" x2 is what was said. Not "keep Jada's name out your mouth". It was entirely about HIM. Everything was about him, a vessel of love, a work in progress, love make you do crazy things. Anyone who suggest he was right in his actions probably needs to do some soul searching because you're thinking along the same selfish shallow way he did. There were millions of people watching around the world, including a lot of children. Is this the message you want to send? comedians have to be able to make fun of anyone and everything = that is actually their protection against being called a racist or anti religion etc.

Will should have said the "Keep my wife's name..." FIRST
yell that out - see what happens - either Rock stops or he keeps going - he is a comedian and they know how to deal with Hecklers - he can choose to back off, or to go harder on it (given the venue and heckler, he would likely back out of it)

but we can't have comedians being attacked on stage for their jokes

I knew Rock wouldn't press charges - but with the amount of video and physical witnesses, they sort of need to chase this one down

if it is allowed once, how many more shows will have this in the future - whether real or fake

talking should happen before violence - try to de-escalate is a good strategy

Imo he did some serious damage to comics and stage performers. In addition, I think Kareem, Richard Williams and a lot of other black celebrities already touched on how disgusted they are with his actions because he's just perpetuating the stigma of black men + violence.

Yeah it's not that simple. If you even look at the Academy's statement, they literally dictate the order of importance or the rules they go by. They said a full investigation would be conducted and - "and will explore further action and consequences in accordance with our Bylaws, Standards of Conduct and California law." CA law comes last. Those that know understand how much power politically and governmentally the Board/Academy/Studios have in this state / city. No DA will touch this without consent from the Board.

While I agree with you, things involving said Board and Academy are never this simple. Never black and white. Woody Allen and Roman Polanski come to mind as prime examples.

As of today, they're not going to take away his statue / award. The problem they're having besides the fear of race card being used is the sheer amount of pushback they're getting from other celebrities. There's been calls for a lifetime ban. This is the slippery slope they live on - too lenient and it'll become "rich and famous have own set of rules" vs too strict and it'll become "because he was black they came down harder."

Was supposed to be a year ban and no Oscars invited or as a guest for at least a year but the longer this goes, the more of a shitshow it'll become.

Even if he were to get tossed out of SAG and can never legally act again? He's set for two lifetimes financially. At least.
