Tell me where to get that codec. Can you view the file full screen and zoom in on the details, like with a jpeg file? The camera's buffer size and speed is really important as well as the file size. With my 5D MkII the RAW +jpeg is usually in the 25MB to 30MB per image, so a 90mb/s card is only good for three images. My 7D will shoot unlimited 5MB jpegs and never bog, but who wants that? I find that burst of three or four usually get the job done. Dave

And Dave, the Canon version works with whatever you have set as the default picture viewer. So in MS Picture viewer you can zoom all the way in.

Hmm, when I was using the Canon 32-bit codec I could zoom in on RAW files in Picture Viewer and see detail. Then I loaded up the MS codec. It still shows the RAW files in Explorer and opens them in Picture Viewer, but zooming in does show nearly as much clear detail now. Odd.

I noticed that as well when I updated recently...I am wondering if they are sacrificing somewhere for the sake of speed? The original Canon codec bogged down at times when viewing really large .raw files...

I've been toying with the idea of selling my 17-40 and picking up a 24-70 f/2.8L, I haven't used it all that much after getting my 10-22, and the 24-70 would perfectly fill the gap I currently have between 40mm and 70mm making for a decent walkaround lens, and giving me an overall lens range of 10-200mm (except for the 1mm that would be between the 10-22 and 24-70).

That was my long-term plan as well. Although I knew I couldn't afford the 24-70 and 70-200 anywhere near the same time, so I opted for the 24-105 and I'll get a 70-200 later. Then I'll probably sell the 24-105 and get the 24-70.
I saw an older 28-70 f2.8L on B&H's used site for a tad over $800. Just FYI in case you want to save $700 in lieu of a few mm of coverage. The 28-70 f2.8L is still a highly regarded lens and this one is rated a 9, which is practically new.

Yeah I'd rather buy used, new gear has increased so much in price over the past few years that it's hard for me to justify new in most cases now.

Anybody in the San Francisco area heading out to Fleet Week this weekend? It's going to be my first time going to SF one (and 2nd time air show over all), thinking about heading over on Saturday.

Wow, you guys really spend a lot of cash on camera equipment. But from the looks of some of the shots and posts here, many of you are professionals. I love looking at your photos and reading your posts and trying to pick up on stuff.
I'm an amateur. I only have a D3100 with a 18-105, 18-270 (bought it when the ring on the 18-105 broke while on vacation), 35mm lens and 18-55mm lens. I just use my camera for vacations, taking pictures of the kids and now, my car. :-) I've only had it for a year but I think I'm ready to jump into the D7000. The wife will get the D3100. She plans on taking a beginner's photography course. Afterwards, she'll probably be more deserving of the D7000. Thanks for sharing your pics and techniques! |

Fleet week on Friday for practice at Crissy. I won't go to SF and deal with the traffic on Sat/Sun but have gone on the Hornblower to see the show.
Not a pro and don't get paid but do have some extra dollars to spend. Just spend the last 2 hours shooting the HS orchestra.

If you don't already have a Flickr account, or some equivalent, consider starting one to show your best shots. You can keep the family shots private, but then there's a free app so that you always have them on your smartphone. Since your wife is into it also, you could plan some trips around photography. My wife isn't interested for herself, only the results, but she tolerates my photo-adventure that I try to weave into most of our trips. I make a vanity book for any significant trip, which the wife loves. Yours might want to design the books. Dave

Anyway, where would you recommend good shooting spots for Fleet Week? I was reading around and found mention of Crissy, top of parking structures near-by, the Aquatic Park and its related pier...

1)TI on the Western shoreline, they fly overhead or at the N. end of the island
2)GG bridge toll booth parking lot or Fort Pt. below 3)Crissy field or Yacht rd. 4)Fort Mason pier 5)Alcatraz 6)Pier at the end of Van Ness 7)The parking lots on the Embarcadero but you would have to get there really early to park against the wall and shoot from your sunroof. Better if you have a truck. Any place you go, you have to get there ~9am or you will not get a spot. If you can get off ~2pm in the East bay, shoot over to TI and take pictures from there on the weekdays. I've done that and it is easy to get back home. I'm taking off work on Friday and staying there late to avoid the nasty traffic. Put the computer in your trunk at work and take your gear out of the front seat when you exit. Your choice of location depends on what kind of lenses you have and what kind of shots you want. Keep the speed at least 1000th and preferably more. 1000th will show blur and get some with Angel or the Marin headlands in the background on the high speed passes, you might get lucky and show the Schlieren waves. Don't be afraid of ISO, take out the noise in PP and try for a mid range Fstop and 1/1200th+ I have pics that came out nice w/ F5.6,ISO 200, 1/1000th at 420mm worth of lens on a crop body (add 1.6x). I'm going for 300mm, F8 and 1/1250 this time. I was clipping off too many planes at 420mm.

Thanks for the info and tips! If I go Saturday, I guess it'll either be TI or Fort Mason/Van Ness.
I can get off work early on Friday, but I don't know whether I'll be in the office in SF (then I can just drive or cab over) or have to be in San Ramon. I'll go find out tmrw. At 420mm they were already that close?? Which location were you at when you used 420mm? I just watched a few videos to guesstimate the focal range I would need. One video was on Marina Green I think and the planes looked pretty far away. Well, over all it looks like it'll be an enjoyable event =)

From Crissy, they flew overhead and you can figure out the other one. Both are uncropped.
