both great ways to see wildlife, but very different situations and compositions.

EF 400mm f/5.6L and my 70-200mm f/4L IS with a 1.4x TC were my prior rigs. I sold the 400mm because I never touched it again after getting the 500L. I still use the 70-200mm a ton. It's a super lens in its own right.

If you look at my Photostream chronologically you'll see a bunch of 70-200mm shots mixed in and those are current. I carry two cameras; the 7D with the 500mm mounted and my 5D MkII with the 70-200mm mounted.

and nice shot DC you're making me long for going to Colorado to check out some more scenery since the last time i was there.

my dad sent me some pictures of the dunes in colorado, he went there this weekend with his wife for one of their random monthly big dates. It's now definitely a place for me to add to my bucket list.

Those dunes look incredible. I haven't been there, but one of my pro photog friends, Bob Rozinski, has a great book about it. If you go, I'll provide the ride from the airport. ('09 M3 coupe).

lol, may take you up on it. unless i can convince my dad to ship his car to Colorado. But i highly doubt he would, and i don't fit too well, which is sad.




I think it would be a fantastic trip, I tryed to go last march, but as i was leaving Colorado, i was in nearly white out condition fog.

it made me miss the "devil's garden" as well, which looked really cool

I'll see if i can dig up my dads email and see if any of the pictures are worth posting from the dunes.

here's 2 shots my dad took with his archaic 3megapixel camera which still seems to get better pictures then a lot of todays point and shoots.

pretty sad.... just shows you the quality they put into the first cameras back in the day.

it's a powershot style of camera he got in maybe 2000 or 2001 somewhere around there, about 700$ (which was a fortune compared to today...)

This fall he bought a 12megapixel point and shoot to replace it. took make 50 shots with it and handed it to his wife and picked his old camera back up again just because he liked the shots better.

I don't blame him. sadly there isn't much control on it, there is an Automatic mode, a Program mode, and some simple video capture. But the manual mode is only ISO adjustment (minimal at best) and a slight bit of + or - EV

very simple. but effective i guess.

I was thinking about picking him up a used 6megapixel Nikon DSLR i saw a few weeks back, but i'm not sure he'd appreciate it.

Good DOF. That leaf coming in from the top really annoys me. I like the composition otherwise. I'd tend not to cut off the pistol, but it works here for some reason and I like your composition choice, but I would have pulled that one leaf out of the way.

Your focal point is a little ambiguous, but I think that you may have intended that. It seems to be somewhere in the middle of the flower, best I can tell in this small size. Great colors and detail in the in-focus areas.

thanks! actually the focal point was the stamen. it was focused on 2 individuals. I was having fun playing with the plant. Sadly it didn't winter too well, so i'm trying to nurse it back to health.

I'll see if there's another one of it so you can really see where my focal point was. If i do find one, it was not intended to be a good shot, just me playing.

And yes, i hate that leaf to, but i felt it added something to the photo somehow, never decided what it added though. I was mostly just playing with DoF just to see how in or out of focus i could make the leaf and the flower.

Reading about your DOF "study" makes me feel better as yesterday I was trying to get my head around how DOF relates to F-stop as relates to the distance from your subject or focal point. I think my problem is that I WANT to know instinctively what settings to enter instead of taking a bunch of shots and getting a good one on "accident". That irritates the technician in me...LOL...anyway here is a shot I took a few weeks ago:

Probably should have shot closer to 180-200mm because the IQ drops a bit at 300mm. What do you guys think?

it's not an easy mix to get.

as you saw with mine, I had to use a tripod. mostly because i was so close to the subject with the macro lens witch limited the amount of light i was able to get in. Didn't really help that i was shooting at ISO 50 either...

^^^Yeah I was wondering at the 25sec. shutter speed and then I noticed the ISO...daaamn son! LOL.....in my shot I was in the middle of a motorpool yard with shipping containers all around and this one little bush in the middle...I think the people around would have been looking at me like WTF is his problem if I had a tripod out there? (even more so than they already were...LOL)
