If you have a decent set up and are miticulous with focus, the results can be stunning. Rodi was getting deep into this wasn't he? I wonder what he's using and what he'd advise about casual dslr video. (He's not casual about anything). Dave

If you've got kids, then you know its a pain in the ass lugging a lot of things around. If I can have a prosumer camera that does great video and take the abuse, that would be the camera for me. So I'm hoping for a D7100 with a swivel display. If I get the D5100, I may be setting myself up for another cracked body. The D3100, I think may have been damaged at the Rochester Museum of Play when it was slung over my shoulder and I bumped into something. I never sling that thing over my shoulder either. I did it that day because I had to chase the kids running around and it was easier to sling it over my shoulder than putting it back in the carrying case, pulling it out and then missing a shot. |

Many years ago, when they were young and with the knowledge I have now....
Shooting kids at that age photos/video... I would go Panasonic DMC LX5, SLR cameras and assorted gear is not something I appreciate lugging around chasing kids.

I had a Lunix FZ 18 and it actually took great pictures. But when I saw the photos my brother took with his Nikon D40 of his son, I was sold on getting my first DSLR. I have no regrets getting the D3100. I've taken some great shots of the kids that I otherwise wouldn't have been able to get with the FZ 18.
But you're right, lugging expensive camera equipment and chasing kids do not go hand in hand. In fact, I broke the plastic mount on the 18-105 lens (which I've since replaced) and ended up buying a Tamron 18-270 with a metal mount while on vacation. That's why I've got some hesitation buying the D5100. I can just see the same thing happening to it as the D3100. Shoot, maybe I should just jump into that D7000 instead of waiting to see if the next version comes with a swivel display. |

I own an FZ-18 as well. Great little camera, but you're right, it's no DSLR. It does take decent videos, though. However, it's limited as far as zooming while shooting vids, and that may be enough to switch to a DSLR for vids.
My friend has a D5100 and up until two days ago he loved it. But just as he got to Florida on vacation it locked up on him. It's stuck electronically halfway into Live View mode. Nothing he does will free it up. He can't change settings or anything. Not sure if this might be a more common issue with them or if his is a rare occurrence.

has anyone here updated to Aperture 3.2 this past week? It seems to crash constantly, within a few seconds of loading. I looked at some of the Apple Discussion threads, and it appears it crashes only when you access RAW images, not jpgs.

Of course, it's useless if you can't work on RAW files.

ahh... well, I'm 99.9% sure this is a software or RAW-related issue on the Mac, because it was working perfectly fine before the update, and the only thing I changed was updating the app.

The new Photoshop deblurring function looks pretty cool. Soon there will be no such thing as a bad picture.

If you use that focal range a lot, its an outstanding lens. Extremely sharp! Its a nice upgrade over its replacements (28-70 and 35-70 f/2.8).

Wow, 50 shots before it bogged down. You could fill a CF card quickly like that.

yeah, but keep in mind that the 1D4 could do 10 fps. I think the reason they are using dual DIGIC 5+ processors is because they are also doing RAW conversion on the fly, which is pretty cool.
