I think the best strategy is to find a car that's in great condition; one that looks like the owner actually gives a sh*t or two about cars. That usually can guarantee a dingless parking job.

Obviously, the driver of the SUV to my right had some mad skills getting out and the one to my left probably didn't have a passenger.

Anyhow, that's my rant for tonight. I'm thinking the next time I take up two spots I'm just going to park horizontally. Then, maybe just then, the idiots will get the message. I think I'm going to start to carry some pre-made post-it-notes in my trunk too.
You know if your that friggen anal about your car maybe you should just leave it in your garage and get a beater instead. Seriously.

In Houston that usually gets your car keyed unless it's something exotic... try one spot far out maybe?

my .02:

I too will not double park, try that down here in S.fla and you're precious car will not be there when you come out, forget a key or ding, the Bimmer will be gone or you run the risk of being shot..

just follow everyone else and park far away and yes, the end spot is the best as it at least protects one side...

Pick someone how cares about their car to park next to like a MB, Lex, Audi...never park next to full sized: pick ups, SUV's, vold school big bodies like Crown Vics, or cars with more rust than paint. Mini Vans are good too because their passenger doors are slide parallel and don't open outwards.

With all due respect to the OP, parking in two spots is going to draw a lot more negative attention to your car than just parking in one spot, even if you park far out in the lot.

I would agree with other folks who suggested parking next to another nice vehicle. Even better, park next to a nice car that looks well-maintained!

Trust me I feel your pain tho. I've been on the receiving end of door dings and such in the past.

Parking in two spots makes such an impression on me, that I can name, in order of occurence, the last 3X that I witnessed it and the places--

1. Lexus IS250, Bonefish Grill, line right down the middle
2. Pontiac GTO, Shop Rite (actually parked lengthwise so as to take up 4+ spaces)
3. S63 AMG, brand new with temp tags, at the mall, diagonally

I don't agree with it, and I actually accidentally did it once, and consider myself lucky nothing happened (parking lot completely empty, so I parked taking up 1 1/2 spaces and walked a mile to the restaurant. Unfortunately the movies opened, and every space was taken, so I wasted one with my behavior).

All of you ought to just ask my girlfriend and watch the expressions on her face as she tells about how irritable I can get when people park next to me. Since thats not possible, I will tell you...

Example #1

I go to a Giant grocery store and park out in the middle of nowhere since there are no corner spots. I'm at least 10 spaces from the nearest car. I come out after 20-30min and some fool in a large pickup truck parks right next to me. Needless to say I hauled out the flashlight and began checking the car up and down the side. I was livid.

Why do people do this? What causes them to want to park next to us? I loath pickup trucks, work trucks, dump trucks, any sort of truck for the most part.

I get the feeling people see a nice car parked out in the middle of nowhere and they know why...they know, so to spite us they park next to us - which they know will make us nervous.

I am very careful where i park mine...the nerve of some people, I would never even touch someone else's vehicle - out of pure respect that they paid for that car, its their money. Likewise, we spend gobs of money on our cars and don't need some fool in their POS dinging our cars up.

However, I never take up 2 spots...i've overheard people in parking lots getting angry about that. I was surprised they were so angry and they sure looked like the type that wouldn't hesitate to put a boot in the side of a car. For my cars sake I don't do that...i'll park across the street and walk if I have to. I didn't spend $50,000 on a car to have some lame ding it over taking up 1 extra spot in a parking lot.

Somone said earlier - "Americans are too lazy to walk" - Amen to that, ain't that the truth...park far enough away and people won't go near ya.

I´m not sure I agree that´s why people do this. I think that people (unconsciously) tend to bunch or group and they park close to another car rather than park in an entirely isolated fashion (people might have entirely different reasons for parking far from an establishment, such as wanting to walk more or going to several stores and parking centrally).

We of course park remotely for different reasons but I would never park across two spots.

If there is a spot next to a handicapped spot, however, those are usually ideal given the blue borders of over a foot between spots.

Don't take up 2 spots... thats just plain egotisticle. Just park in the back part of the lot... alone!

Actually no. Despite all the crap about police I hear I have found them generally very helpful and friendly here (Toronto), apart the one who told me off for jay walking, but that's another story.

A cop came to the store (the store security called them after the witness has given them the plate) and he told me that unfortunately the witness didn't leave their name and contact details and since it was also on a parking lot (not a road) that he could not get a ticket from the police. He said the insurance companies really don't like people who leave the scene of an accident and that the car was registered near by he would go round and speak to the owner.

He called me later and said he had been to the owners house, seen the car which had blue paint on the rear bumper and spoken to the owner who had admitted it and promised he would call me to sort out the repair bill. He called later that day and paid for all damages (new bumper at around $1300) direct to the body shop I took it to.

I'm confused on why so many have this self-centered attitude of anyone parking next to you just because you park in B.F.E.

Sure some people do this to be an ass, but if they park normally next to you why such a big fucking deal?

I'm so glad I don't have any of these complexes about parking. It would make my life miserable.

I hate it too....ppl that take tow spots look stupid.Who in the hell go to a restaurant and got to the parking to have 10 mints inspection.If you dont want your carr been scratch keep it in home,dont drive it.

I park my 2 BMW's away posible from others cars,thats it.

+1 You drive a 330i... I usually just take the time to piss on the driver door when some asshole thinks he is special like that. I mostly see it with modded Cougars and crap like that around here though

Just park far away and hug the outside edge so nobody should get close to you. Don't be a tool.
