My E46 M3 was great until about 100,000 miles. Then it was a major headache. The fact that you had to get the valves set manually also cost a fortune.

My first BMW was a 1971 2002 that I bought new. It was a great car for the time but was more of a kit car than a complete reliable daily driver.

The steering on the older BMWs was much more responsive than todays electronic steering. But my M2 has the best feeling I have seen in years. The M2 has much more torque and engine response than any other BMW I have owned. So I stand by my decision of wanting to keep my current M2 over all the previous BMWs I have owned.

Superior on street and track in my opinion....it's better in doing the two things rather wel.

So 1x BMW for the rest of my life...then I would pick my manual 2017 M2. If it's the only car I have. And yes I actually plan to keep it also for the rest of my life
I don't like big cars...so the f80 M3, f82 M4, M5, M6 are out for me. If it's only one car I have then it needs to be a BMW that is great on street and good on track. Small but also practical and useable everyday with big levels of fun. E92 M3 is a nice car, but a bit to heavy and to big for my taste....the M2 feels so more nimble and smaller. 1M is also high on the list, but I like the look of the M2 better. E46 M3 is a nice car and would be my second choice...but number 1 stays the M2 with manual gearbox. If the e46 M3 CSL would have been a manual then it could maybe take nr 1 from the M2.

If the question is "one BMW besides your other normal daily car for the rest of your live"... Then I would pick the e46 M3 CSL with a set of AP racing brakes!

This gets more interesting IMO if it's really the only car you have access to for the rest of your life. It's a lot easier to say M coupe or something along those lines if you're also permitted to have something like a Macan GTS in the next garage bay.

If it's really one car and one car only, think you've gotta go with something a little more versatile i.e. M550, new M3 w/ xDrive, 440 GC perhaps even an X3 M40. You get my point.

One BMW then free to get whatever else in addition? Batmobile. Then a Panamera Turismo GTS.

At the moment I would say an F32 - my current 435iXdrive or an M4. I recently got a 6er but have yet to discover it fully. Design wise I think BMW did something amazing with the F32 series - one of the best for me along with the evergreat E92.

If I'd stick to one BMW, it would be my first BMW I bought. My 2008 BMW 328xi. It's not the fastest nor best looking. But I had this car for the past 9 years. I couldn't imagine letting go of this car. It has a sentimental value and there's no amount of money that can replace it. This car genuinely makes me happy every time I drive it. I catch myself looking back at the car after I park and walk away.

My E91 335d m sport with 6 speed manual conversion, 360hp 550 ft/lb does every thing i need it to do. things may change i am just on with a 335d conversion into a 123d m sport coupe, so im thinking that is going to be an awesome little weapon.

1M

IMHO the best M car BMW ever made.
I tried to get an allocation when they were new and couldn't.
Had an opportunity to buy a low miles one a few years ago, but couldn't stomach $60k on a 3 year-old 10k mile car.

But sometimes I still wish...

1M is my favorite car in general....

but, for a lifetime only one car, I would need a sedan or wagon.
probably would go with a new F80, or a well maintained E39 in manual.

My '72 2002...

Interesting question to consider. I like chasing the newest BMW technology as much as the next guy. I'm a serial M6 and M5 owner but the car that I will keep forever is my '72 2002. It's far from the quickest or the fastest car I've owned but the engagement experience of this car is near "magical" for me. It makes me smile every time I get in it!
