I love talking about cars, because my stable is so huge I'll ramble on forever.

I guess there's generally a lot more judgement or whatever about what your car says about you, mainly in the USA? I guess the other side to it for me is that I visibly do not fit the 'poser' part of the BMW image (I'm always dressed scruffy, never do my hair etc) And if someone wants to pass judgement on my choice of car, it's a quick way for me to work out that I don't need to spend any further time with them.
its insane here in southern california. people will go to great lengths to lease or buy a premium brand car and be absolutely broke because of it.

i've been daily driving an electric smart car for about five years now and it has been, by far, the car that gets the most attention and comments. i've actually made several acquaintances from people coming up to me at the gym because they want to joke about the smart car (i'm relatively big) or they are curious about it. lol

I usually say "Panderrari" since it's a nickname for the best and most beloved car I have ever owned (as seen on the picture).
I tend to keep the 335i or F15 M50d in the dark since the BMW stigma is really strong and real, non-biased conversation with real car people is very, very rare these days. Also, de-bagding, for the same reasons, is a must for me. Hide, stay in the dark. Pretty sad, to be honest.

And the "Panderrari" answer works on many levels.
Normal people think you're a weirdo. Fair enough.
Car people will laugh and will agree.
Real car nuts will fully agree and will start to investigate - and will eventually reveal the BMWs.

(It's a Fiat Panda 4x4, a pretty rare thing, if you're curious)

I generally drive a company truck to work, but was having the Winter tires switched to summer.
I have a 22yr old mechanic in my shop that noticed the X3 and, with phone in hand, asked what engine was under the hood.
Told him the 3.0 liter inline
He asked about the max horsepower
I told him it was rated at around 300 "horsies"
He converted it to cubic inches, then showed me the "horsie" per cube and says
"That's pretty impressive"
Then he looks again at the X3 and says "too bad it's in a modern day station wagon"
I just smiled and shook it off. Kids

It makes a change to some ago when people in the UK used to say my house has gone up by £4000.00 this month.

With such a question I evade out of it and ask them a question instead. If they are persistent my first answer is “a simple commuter” then put them back on subject.

Depends who's doing the asking, usually I would respond "a BMW" if another BMW driver asks I would respond with " a G01" if that person does not understand, I'll try to find a person who does and get into a real BMW conversation

I never realized how bad this actually is, you almost assume people know what an m5 is, but to my surprise, 70% of "car people" get glassy eyed and say oh... yeah? I've seen a lot of those(which in my area they aren't common). So I've just started dumbing it down to a 5 series.

I usually reply by saying:"what is the point of your question?" or by saying:"what do you think?"

Gotta say, people thinking you're the richest, most stuck up guy in the world by owning a Bimmer is true. I almost don't want to take the M3 to work anymore from all the dumbass comments I get. One coworker asked if I was going to grow my hair out and slick it back to look like all the other BMW owners... wtf? When I drive the wife's car to work everyone wants to know where the BMW is. It's ridiculous.

I have a medical office and have my M3 parked right next to it. Alot of people ask if they're paying for my car. When I drive my spare Honda and park it they ask if I'm having financial issues. When I had a Mustang over a decade ago no one gave me problems. But who wants to drive a Stang'?
