I still think there is room for another body like an EOS-1D Xs. Much higher MPs (30+), lower fps, etc mostly for studio use. I feel like releasing only this body will anger a lot of photographers who need the higher MP for larger prints, significant cropping, etc.

That's true Josh... but, I think quite a few Canon users were looking forward to seeing Canon dabble in the medium-format business. Especially after all the rumors of a high-end MP beast in the works.

I think that there's some truth in what you said too. Historically speaking, Canon has released the more speed oriented 1d version before the higher MP version...but this is the first time that a first release has been full frame instead of APS-H. If they release a 30+ MP version, i think a lot of people will be happy, but it's going to be at least $9k. Personally, i'm completely satisfied with that the 1dX appears to offer. And if i can't get one, i'll take advantage of lower prices or people dumping 1Ds3's.

ISO 204,800?!?! Damn, I wonder how that is going to look.
Kudos to Canon for keeping the pressure on. With Nikon and Canon slugging it out like this, we all win.

they mentioned it 'forensic' applications...so i can't imagine it'll be much use without a pretty substantial amount of NR. however, i bet the useful ISO range is going to increase tremendously.

Below are 2 photos I took with my iPhone 4 ... then optimized them to attach them here. Quality is pretty good what do you think? First photo is from my front garden, just prepared the fall display for the kids, the second one I took in a small British Columbia town in western Canada...

I like the first shot... the 2nd one seems a bit blurry/noisy.

Do I really need a 32+ megapixel sensor? I thought this was a pretty good, scientific article someone wrote about that question, so I thought I'd share.

Thanks for that reference. While I agree with the overall conclusions I was a bit surprised by some of the results. In particular the resolution simulations run by the author seem to show that sharpening can consistently produce resolution (both MTF-50 and MTF-10) better than the diffraction limit. Certainly for a classical sinusoidal resolution test target this is possible. With no interfering noise you can take a sinewave pattern of very low contrast and sharpen it up to an almost perfect bar pattern. I wonder, however, how well this works in practice with a complex image. I've sharpened many images over the years and have some idea of the limitations of this sort of processing. As a result I wonder if the assessment of the utility of increasing sensor resolution is somewhat overstated.
Regardless, I agree with the utility of increasing pixel pitch to the point that anti-aliasing filters can be removed, and ultimately, that teleconverters become superfluous (i.e. that the sensor truly oversamples all the image information provided by the lens). |
