Played like absolute garbage on Wednesday for my works golf league. My drives were very bad but somehow I still shot a 49. Couldn't believe it. Thought my score would be closer to 60. I will be hitting the range before my tee time next Wednesday to get everything dialed back in.

I love this thread. Very relatable to hear about people's successes and frustrations out on the course.

I picked up some new Ping irons (G425's) a couple summers ago but I had been very inconsistent with the gap wedge and sandwedge that came with the set. I finally got smart and picked up a 54 degree Ping S159 wedge. It's a smaller and lighter club and reminds me my old Golfsmith wedge I used to play with 15+ years ago and could absolutely carve with. The new wedge saved my round yesterday and helped me have about 5 up and downs for par and an amazing bunker shot. There is just something about looking down at the club and feeling very confident with the looks and feel of it. I shot an 84 right in my average score range, but carded a 7 to start the round and several 6's. It would have been a struggle breaking 90 without the new club.

I am with you there! Took me awhile to get my wedges dialed in. I have a PW and SW that came with my iron set a long time ago. I decided last year to buy a 52, 56, 60 and 72 degree wedges and have slowly worked on them over the last year and I think I have been able to figure out my issues with chipping. I remember last year, I would add atleast 5-8 strokes to my score by just chipping. I have most certainly gotten better at using them which in turn, my score has dropped. So I am happy about that! Granted, I only play once per week but my goal is when my daughter gets older and shows interest in playing, I will be able to play 2-3 times per week or so.

Holy crap 72 degree sounds insane. I think my only use for one of those is to get over something tall right in front of me. I hit all my irons really high so I don't think like using anything over 56 degrees, and I heavily rely on backspin to stop my ball on the greens.

Has anyone tried the PXG golf balls? I think they are new to the market. I grabbed a box the other day and tried em out this weekend. I noticed my drives and longer shots were not carrying as far compared to when I use my normal ball the Bridgestone Tour B RX. And the back spin I was producing was insane. I hit a 6 iron onto a green and the ball backed up about 6 feet up a hill. I have never backspinned a longer iron like that up a hill before.

I haven't! I use Max-Fli Matte Orange or Callaway Matte Red and like them. Get them for a good price off of Amazon so I can't really complain.

Until this year I had at most a 56 degree sand wedge as my highest loft club. I realized I had gaps from my iron set to wedges and did some "figuring" with my high school rithmatic. And decided I needs a 50 degree to come near 10 yards less than the wedge. And a 54 degree sand wedge. And added a 58 degree wedge. Very happy with that array. If I played where there was lots of lush grass maybe something higher would be cool but I'm in the desert and we have a fairly bare setting much of the time.

I play Vice Pro Plus. Have also played Vice Pro and Pro Soft. Depends on the weather. Now in the heat (furnace like now) the Pro Plus feels soft. Come winter I'll used up the Pro and Pro softs balls.

I do like those callaway matte color balls as well. I did make the mistake of ponying up and trying those more expensive bridgestones and the distance differences are pretty big the longer the club. And as I approach my mid 40's I fantasize about how much farther I could hit the ball when I was younger and I'm addicted to maximizing that now so the bridgestones will stay in the bag. Is that a symptom of a mid-life crisis??

Was using Kirkland until this year. Tested them on simulator last winter 20x along with prov and pro v x. I like the feel of the prov but the spin on the pro v x. Kirkland sig is a excellent ball for those who dont mind a very spinny ball or higher hc golfers. I am at the point where I am noticing the difference between each ball. I prefer the feel of the standard pro v putting but the pro v x helps me much more on drives, irons, and wedge shots.

First, I think golf balls are the most fun piece of equipment to experiment with because you can easily just buy a sleeve and try them.

While I think matte balls look really cool, they test really horribly. Mygolfspy.com does the most comprehensive ball testing I know and they say “friends don’t let friends play matte balls.” If you care about performance I’d stay away from matte (and Surlyn-cover) golf balls.

https://mygolfspy.com/buyers-guides/...st-golf-balls/

Personally I only play (white) Titleist Pro V1x. They fly a little high, but I love the extra spin over the other Pro V1 variants. Besides the performance, I choose Titleist because they’re made right here in the USA. I take advantage of their buy 3 dozen get 1 free promotion every spring and buy the whole season worth of balls at once. This promotion brings the price to $41.25 a dozen. I add custom play number 45 to make identification easier.

I like the way the matte balls look and it's easier for me to pick up on when I hit the ball or looking for it. I am not looking to spend 10mins looking for my ball. No one has time for that. lol.

I might have to look at other colored balls then. I didn't know that. I just know I had an easier time picking up the ball when I hit it and searching for it.

Maybe I will check amazon today and see if there are other colored balls that aren't matte and don't have the surlyn-cover that you spoke about above.

Thank you for that!

Another vote for 3 piece surlyn cover balls. And another vote against Matte finish. I hate the feel of them and even if they tested out equally couldn't do it.

Big fan of the Titleist ProV1 and X but I play a LOT of golf and I can't really tell appreciable difference between them and the Vice models I use except price.

However originally Vice was about $26 a dozen (buy 5 dozen). It has now crept up to $33 (buy 5 dozen).

If the cost gap narrows much more I'll either revert to Titleist or seek a newer entrant to the market. Not a concern for 2024 since I have 8 dozen balls in the garage.

I might look at switching up my golf ball selection but I like the colored balls as I have said previously, I can see them better. Plus, I have enough balls right now to carry me through to the end of the golf league (last Wednesday of August). So no need to spend the money if I don't need to.

On a side note. Played bad last night again. Not sure what is going on..two weeks straight. Couldn't get my drives locked in and my approach shots to the green weren't there. I even went to the driving range before hand to figure out my driver. Which I was hitting pretty good or it could have been I was facing my old golf teammate and the guy is a complete fuck stick about everything..who knows. The dude is a stickler about the rules. It's only beer golf league. He told me I had to take a 1 stroke penalty because I was 1 foot into the woods. I told him to get the fuck outta here with that bullshit.

I like color too. Both to see it better AND when approaching our shots a lime green Vice is easy to ID and fewer chances someone else accidentally hits my ball.

Played in the company outing last week (scramble format). Contributed more than my fair share of shots. Sank a 20+ foot putt, one of my best. Short irons were working OK.

Hoping to play one of the best public (resort) courses in the area in a couple of weeks.

I had one of the most enjoyable rounds last Friday morning with a buddy. There was no one in front of us and we didn't bother keeping score. My new wedge continues to deliver for me and I had my first chip-in in years from about 25 yards out. I also had two eagle putts from less than 20 feet. Unfortunately, I didn't make either but had tap ins for birdie both times. I play soooo much better when I can just go up and hit my shot and not wait on anyone. And not keeping score removed some pressure and expectation.

Today I'm taking my boys to the driving range. Got some new kids clubs for them and hoping they get into golfing more.

Seems like to me, my short irons are always struggling! Which course is that?

It's amazing how good you play when you don't think about it and don't put any pressure on yourself. I need to get back into thinking like that. Been playing shitty the past few weeks.

My plan as well. Get my daughter into it so we can play a quick 9 every weekend! I'm sure the wife would be okay with that. lol
