Fuel Capacity and "Reserve"

I almost did a "Kramer" today and ran the remaining fuel mileage down to about 10 miles before empty as I was only a few miles from home. I filled up and it took approx 13.4 US gallons.

From what I understand, the fuel capacity for the MY24 US Xdrive 28i is approx 14.25 US gallons which means there may be at least a half gallon reserve after "empty" is reached. Of course this is dependent on the sensors being accurate.

Has anyone run the tank down to zero and how many gallons did it take to fill up?

I won't repeat this experiment in future as it could result in a divorce.

I'd be too paranoid to run it that low, I was always warned on my e90 and e92 that the tank should never be filled up at less than 1/4 tank as a rule because the design of that fuel tank could cause fuel starvation issues. Not sure how true that was or if it applies to newer models, but filling up at 1/4 has been my habit for the past 12 years.

That's usually our plan as well. Just curious if others have gone lower.

One parameter is the gas mileage the computer is using to convert the remaining gas volume in miles.

On a trip to the mountains, I ended up concluding that the average gas mileage used would be from the current trip (since the car was started) rather than the average since the tank was filled.

As I was going down the mountain on efficiency mode, coasting a lot, the estimated remaining mileage shot up fast, whereas the overal gas mileage from the last refill increased slowly.

I've never gotten that low; I did go down to 6 miles to empty in my 328, but I can't remember how much was actually left in the tank when I filled up.

Fuel pump was in the tank, and if you ran the fuel load too low, the pump could overheat and fail. Actually happened to me with my E36 M3.

I had a close call, with the remaining range was 0 and no line was visible and filled to 48L, 3L or 1gal more, which made me sus that I was being overcharged on the pump.
