BMW wireless charging could be frying iPhone NFC chips

Seems this might be only on the iPhone 15 range but unclear so beware those with new phones.

Yet another reason why the wireless charger in my X1 will never be used.

Thanks! I just saw in some reviews that wireless charger activated Apple Pay. Maybe it is somehow related idk.

It doesn’t activate “Apple Pay”, but if you are using a digital key the key is also in your wallet and it “activates” when the phone is put into the wireless dock similar to how a credit card “activates” when using Apple Pay.

The wallet activating when the phone is docked is annoying (it wants to faceID but the dock is not positioned to scan your face) and doesn't seem necessary once the key is setup. Then add that the phone charges faster using a cable.

The wireless charger is basically useless in the X1, except for the specific convenience of an owner who absolutely doesn't want any cables or accessories in the car. The relatively slow charging, the sometimes excessive heat production, and the fact that it occupies a space that could have been used for hard buttons, a cubby, or something more useful made it nothing more than a novelty for me the first week I got the car. With Qi wireless charging, the charging is only optimized when the induction coil is in an optimal spot with the phone. With the way this charger was designed, there's no way for the charger to account for the specific height of each individual device, even if multiple coils are inside the charger. Add to that that all recent iPhones have a camera bump that protrudes from the phone body, and it creates a gap when resting the phone against the charging surface, which also degrades charging efficiency.

I have found the wireless charger to be decent for topping up on long journeys but I never get into the car with such a low charge that I would need a large charge anyways especially with how long the new 15 Pro Max lasts..

Since these reports I have turned it off as a precaution and added the usb c cable into the car should I need it at some point.

I'm actually curious what the output wattage is on the USB-C ports in the car. Anyone know? I was thinking about buying a cheap tester on Amazon to satisfy my curiosity. Looking at the manual it states all the USB-C ports are rated at 3A. Assuming this is at 12V, it should be 36W if I'm understanding it correctly. If that's the case, that's more than enough to quick charge an iPhone or power the MagSafe charging puck without a cigarette lighter adapter.

I believe many have said it's far faster to use a cable than use the wireless charger, that's more for convenience. My wife uses it just to top hers up a little but nothing more.

My 15 PM won't be going anywhere near it for now.

Charging wattage is less than 10 watts. Painfully slow obviously. Much faster to plug in to charge as Monty pointed out. When I *sometimes* used it on my '20 x3m and even my wife's current x1, my Pixel got incredibly hot, so overheating issue not necessarily unique to Apple devices

Charging with the MagSafe charger is at 15W and more than enough for me, even when using CarPlay. Not everyone wants a dash mount though, but works well for my use and I like having the screen up where I can see it when I need to.

The manual states the following about USB C ports
For charging mobile devices with a maximum charging current of 3 A.

That’s what I said in my post you quoted. I was asking about the wattage, which is normally calculated by volts X amps. Not sure if they kept it at 12V, or if they stepped it down.

I recall talking about this months ago in a thread here. When I did math to get from amps to volts, someone chimed in that the ports probably don't support PD.

Yeah, I remember the thread but I don’t think there was a definitive answer. I did see in another forum that the iX supports up to 36W, and I’m hoping that since the X1 took many features from it, that maybe that carried over.

Looks like I am sticking to my 12V-USB charger. Frankly I always thought it made more sense to use cables given that wireless charging could be finicky, and I have tendency to fiddle with phone at red lights etc.

And either way I need to charge two phones (usually when I’m in the car anyway). Just glad to hear there is option to disable wireless charging. So that’s a good spot for storage …

The iOS update seems to have cured the iPhone 15 overheating.

Picking up an iPhone 15 pro max later today. Is this still a thing or did the update fix this problem?

They put a fix into iOS 17.1.1 release apparently.
