just got my yearly property tax bill on my new X1: $1981, based on $48000 MSRP

This afternoon, my mailman delivered the metal license plate. Inside, the DMV also included the property tax bill, prorated for May 1 to Dec 31. At assessed value of $48000(the actual MSRP), my yearly property tax is US$1981. If I don't pay it within the next 90 days, the registration will be suspended. (yes, my county charges a lot for property taxes on cars and house)

At least next tax year, the value of the car will go down somewhat(?), but my county's tax office has a nice online calculator, showing that it will be around $1700 for 2024. They base it on the private sale value on KBB.

Sure makes the insurance premium really cheap.($1035 for 12 months, with maximum coverage available)

There really is no business as lucrative as the governments.(local, state, federal, whatever)

The county bundles your property tax and house?

You don't just pay a sales tax once?

Sales tax is paid at time of purchase and the dealer collects it. I forgot how much it was.. but a little over $1000. (plus other title/registration fees)

I wish.. .there's no discount for bundling the house and car property taxes.

The yearlycar property tax for the county is billed yearly via the DMV along with the yearly registration fee of about $100. The house property tax comes directly from the county tax office.

Hawaii has it really good in comparison. We have no property tax on cars, just annual registration and 4.712% sales tax at time of purchase. Registration should be a little over $400 per year, and my car insurance is about $1200 a year. Even the drivers license renewal is cheap, with it being about $5/year. Our cost of living is pretty ridiculous though.

What state are you in? I'm in PA, and they charge sales tax on the original purchase, and a $44 annual registration fee. That's it--no annual "tax".

Yep, I'm in PA too. Paying a yearly property tax on a personal vehicle just sounds insane.

What the heck? You pay state tax, but then there's an additional 'tax' on the vehicle (along with property?) every year?

Holy smokes...I thought Canadian taxes were nasty...(GST/HST)...basically pay once at time of purchase for Provincial (State) and then Fed. Around 13%. Once.

I,d move from that county/state if it was me. No property tax on cars where I live, just annual registration fee which runs roughly $30 if I remember right.

Where (roughly) are you located so I make sure NOT to move there!

The insurance in US is CHEAP. Here its more than double. Around $3k per year but the yearly tax is ~300$ but we have high sales tax(vat) 20%.
