Motor Trend said "Atrocious ride quality... shock absorbers were filled with cement"?
How many of you current and/or former U11 X1 owners agree with what Motor Trend said about the ride quality of the X1? Specifically with MSport suspension and the optional 20 inch wheels that they they tested.
https://www.motortrend.com/news/2024...suvoty-review/ "our test vehicle had the optional M Sport package, which added a very, very sporty suspension tune that made this small SUV an absolute riot in the corners. It also made the car ride like its shock absorbers were filled with cement, turning even what would be acceptably maintained roads in any other car into a shaky, bouncy mess." I cant speak directly about M suspension however there are plenty of threads on forum that say the suspension is bouncy & worsened when larger tires are added. Also that what BMW calls Adaptive Suspension is not really what other brands actually do like reading the road & making hundreds or thousands automatic adjustments as it scans the road ahead.
After reviewing what owners had to say about their 2023 when I my ordered my 2024 last October I went with the 28i, with Premium Package & standard 18 wheel / all season tires. Im glad I did as the extra sidewall rubber helps to stabilize the ride (most of the time) There are times when the vehicle does bounce a lot on roads that seem to be well maintained. These roads Im referring to Ive driven many times in my 2019 Acura RDX advance without an issue. |

It’s certainly not what you’d expect from an SUV, and they could probably tune the valving on the dampers better or play with the spring rates, but I am not unhappy about it. It handles well, takes turns with more confidence than I would expect such a tall vehicle to do with less roll than I expected.

Before my X1 28i, I had a 550i with 19" and Sports Package. The car as comfortable and tight on smooth roads, but the suspensions felt harsh on irregular surfaces to the point of being jerked around in the car. I cracked a suspension link on a pothole and I had to swerve to avoid any manhole.
When I tried the X1, I tested both 20" and 18" wheels on the same stretch of road. I felt a huge difference: the car is more comfortable (bumps shocks and noise) and not much less sporty (a bit more lazy lean in curves) with the 18" wheels. I didn't prefer the bi-color design of the 18", but despite the design, it was clear I would not like the larger wheels. I believe we all rationalize our decisions eventually. So, you have to test ride the options carefully being aware of your own biases. |

About the standard 18 wheels. I did not realize they had HUB CAPS until the 1st time I washed it. I would have preferred 100% wheels & if the sales advisor told me they had hub caps I would have gone with another 18 design. {The last time I had a car with hubcaps was back in 1976} I heard some say they hit a pothole & the cap came off & had to be replaced at a cost about $50. Fortunately Ive not lost one yet. 🤞🤞🤞🤞

Yes, the cap can come off. I accidentally hit a curb at maneuvering speed and the cap was dislodged and almost fell. I found it hanging by a thread as I parked in my garage.
One should check immediately if/after hitting something. |

The suspension is very good but not SUV like,if that makes sense. I was doing 180 on the highway and it was very good, with 220 km/ per hour it felt light and nimble but stable. I was very positively surprised how it behaved, more like station wagon not the SUV. In the city if the roads are fine it is OK, even on the worse roads it is fine but you WILL feel the curbs and potholes and you famiky might be jotted a bit. In the past I had 320 with sport and it was stiff, this is more like bouncy but not stiff. The steering is too light but otherwise it feels sporty. On the roundabout you will feel some wobble but not much. I think it was Autogefuhl that in one of the reviews stated it feels like F1 car almost. I mostly ignore the motor press.
I often completely disagree with their views vs my personal experience on cars I own. It's usually some journaliat using a car for a day, on a track. Compared with me who owns a car for many years being used on public roads. This is another case where I see sensationalist click bait journalism, with little in common with my real life experiences. |

After my 128ti the ride feels like a magic carpet lol. Handling and ride for me is good and beats hands down a VW Tiguan I had a few years back. Cornering and gear changes in the Tiguan left a lot to be desired

On bad Los Angeles roads I cringe constantly driving over cracks, uneven bumps, and potholes in mine. I'm on the OEM 20's and am considering going with a very soft puffy tire to compensate. Compared to my X3 M40i on 21's, the X1 is definitely much bouncier and twitchy on all comparative surfaces. Really cool looking car but not sure I can cope with the suspension, long term, in my region. I'm in the middle of a possible buy back with BMW Customer Relations at the moment.

NJ roads X1 m35i here have not heard from the wife so that's that! I don't get the bouncing or "cement" all are talking about but sure you will feel the bumps its on 20s with 40 profile. My daily GTI is stiffer even with DDC on comfort with 19" for sure. We love the car its a looker with great pick up, room and sporty when needs to be. Now the SW bugs...!

I don't understand this. I have many complaints about this car. Our roads are truly terrible, but, the ride quality is not one of the things I complain about. We have the 20s and the M sport package and the ride is firm but not harsh or crashy. The X1 rides very well in my opinion. I don't understand why the reviewers would find it so harsh, unless of course the US delivered vehicles have their suspension tuned differently.

The ride quality really is atrocious. It feels like there are no shock absorbers at all. I regret buying it and should have done a better job trying to understand every possible shortcoming of the vehicle during the test drive. Lesson learned for the future.

how can the same car feel so different to so many people? it just doesn't make any sense.
when I was figuring out which small SUV to buy a year ago, I ended up with just 3 or 4 different ones on my list. According to what I wrote down in my notes, I drove 4 other small SUVs with similar MSRP as the X1. They included Acura, Audi, Alfa Romeo and Mercedes. The X1 with M sport package/suspension on 19 inch wheels were the most comfortable to me, but it also was the most stable. The other were either too harsh or to floaty(meaning not very confidence inspiring in the curves) |

I know you said "Let's not talk about the torque steer"
However, I'm wondering if my '23 xdrive28i X1 is too underpowered. I have tried flooring the gas pedal with my hands off the steering wheel. There's barely any steering wheel movement to either side. I then tried again with launch control, still the same. Does that mean there's no torque steer? Or perhaps only the X1 M35i has enough power to induce torque steer? Or am I completely misunderstanding what torque steer is? I remember when I borrowed my friend's new Caddy XT4(?) for a week, its steering wheel(when I only had one hand on it) would pull to the left with aggressive acceleration from a standstill. I dont' notice anything like that with my X1. Thanks! |
