Drive Recorder Export

I got hit from behind today: a car nicked my rear left corner passing behind me on a roundabout. Damage is minimal luckily, some scratches on the trim and bumper. But because the other car drive off immediately this qualifies as a hit and run.

I realised something was off and hit the drive recorder button, sadly a few seconds too late to capture the whole thing.

I tried all evening to export the video to show to the police but it's not working. It says "exporting 0%" which disappears after one second. I assume the video is supposed to end up in my Photos library on the iPhone. Had this actually ever worked for anyone?

I could purchase a USB-C flash drive but see to option to copy from internal to USB. Can someone confirm that option shows up of you insert an actual USB-C drive before I make that purchase?

Picture of the damage attached 😅

Showing this video to the police and insurance could actually save me having to pay a premium and license plate may be actually be readable on a bigger screen 😤

I had my X7 hit behind. Drive Record captured all impact. I could watch its recording from the menu, but I could not export it to USB initially.
I googled it and found an article to say that I have to format USB in specific format (FAT32 or so, cannot remember exactly), and could export/copy this recording to USB.
I remeber I looked up youtube how to too.

Damn that hit and run!
I use this Samsung micro drive to export all my videos, I didn’t need to preformat it

You can export it both to phone and USB-C flash drive. Its very slow in both cases. Its best to turn off the raw fisheye video files (or whatever it was exactly called) in settings, as the more and heavier files it exports, the slower the export.

I was hit by an Uber eats person on a moped (I was stationary, he was doing about 20mph). The drive recorder did not record anything. Damage required replacement of whole rear bumper assembly (all cosmetic damage). Luckily, I had a Thinkware U3000 dashcam that captured everything. Not sure it would be so clear cut if I didn't have that. Can't rely on the drive recorder which was set up to automatically record in such situations.

I think this is for more severe crashes. In crashes like yours maybe you have to manually record by pressing button and it starts recording -30 seconds before the button press

I think you may well be right.

When this happens to you, your first reaction is not to press the manual button. Your first reaction, after ensuring your passengers are OK, is to look at the damage (by then, its too late to press the manual button). I thought one of the advantages of the drive recorder is to remove the need for a dash cam in the case of an accident. That is certainly not the case. But at what point does it work? For instance, do the airbags have to activate? I think BMW need to explain better how this works as I'm not impressed so far.

They didnt explain anything in the manual TBH. Its very basic for such a complex car. Mostly trial and error to understand stuff

Tried exporting to both phone and USB, but comes with a message “Export not possible”. Any ideas why?

BMW recently released a YouTube video and you can see how the export feature is supposed to work. See 1.46.
