BMW X1 Roof Rack Setup

Hello everyone,

I wanted to share my current roof rack and box setup.

Rack: OEM roof rack

Box: Thule Motion XT L Cargo Box

I chose the Thule Motion XT firstly because the glossy black matches the shadow line package perfectly. It is very spacious and can be opened from both sides. Comes with 2 keys to keep it secure. It is very simple to attach to roof rack, simply have to turn 4 knobs on the inside to clamp it to the rack.

If people are considering larger box, XL will likely fit but will hang over the windshield.

Nice! I have the Thule Force Xt Cargo Box XL (https://www.thule.com/en-us/cargo-ca...t-xl-_-635801) that I’ve used on my 2014 Countryman and the overhang wasn’t too bad. I suspect it will fit a bit better on the X1, but won’t be able to find out until I get the roof bars. I did have to swap the stubby antenna out for a super stubby, so interested to see how that all fits over the shark fin for that size box.

Looks great with the shadow line! Any issue with the antenna? Currently between the L (16 cu ft, 165lbs), XL (18cu ft, 165lbs), and the OEM 520L (18.4 cu ft, 154lbs).

Trying to decide whether the slight extra space of the OEM is more valuable than the extra weight the Thules are rated for. From the specs of them, it seems the OEM is about an inch shorter but I'm not sure if those are interior or exterior dimensions.

How much of an MPG loss did you note with the Thule? None of the racks have an associated Cd published, so curious what's been seen real world.

I've got that same box on my X3M, love it.

need to get the crossbars for the X1 in case we need the box on that, good to know it looks pretty good. Also Portimao Blue M Sport.

I just upgraded to a 2024 X1 from a 2014 X1 and just tested the roof rails from the 1014 on the 2024.

While the 2014 rails "seem" to fit and lock down they are not an exact match so I probably wouldn't trust them on the 2024.

Are there alternatives to the OEM roof rails?

Yes, the newThule EVO bars and towers. They bring the height of the box down around an inch vs the X1 specific Thule \ BMW assembled package. Probably are quieter too since the box is closer to the car.

That said, you could probably go with your old towers and longerThule Aero Bars.
I had the 1st gen X1 too. I think my old bars were 207s and the new X needed 213s? Going from memory so not sure. Size the 2 cars on the Thule site
and compare part numbers. It'll be clear what you need.

The box is a full sized Ski box and it's set so the hatch opens fully without touching. It barely overhangs the windshield. The sunroof tilts up ok

I'm also interested on understanding the height for the solutions you all have.

I'm on a tight situation(quite literally).

I have a clearance of 45cm from top of the fixed X1 rails to the entry of my garage. That means racks plus box can´t go over 44cm. I really don´t want a solution where I need to put/take out the box to enter the garage.

They make thin profile ski boxes that are about half the height of the regular ones. I think Thule makes one

Thule Vector Alpine + Thule Wing Bar Evo = approx 35 cm from factory rails...
But you need to measure them onsite to be 100% sure

i see that you put t the bars closer to the front, Thule used to say that as far behind the better for noise, but on the X1 kit they have this symbol, i guess that it's due to inclination of the roof? So it should be as close to the front as possible?
