how do dealers check oil levels after doing oil changes since there's no dipstick?

That was how I did the ATF change on my old Mercedes' 722.6 transmission.(which had no ATF dipstick) I used a measuring cup to see how much ATF fluid I drained out. Then I used a clean measuring cup to put back the exact same amount. (even weighed them down to grams, just to be 100% correct)

That said, I wouldn't be surprised if most of the dealers just drain the oil for X number of minutes, and blindly pour Y-liters of engine oil into every car that comes into the shop. Well, the "Y" is based on the model/engine size you have. Most mechanics do that anyway. Chances are people don't have an undersized oil pan/sump. So it's very much unlikely they would overfill engine oil if they are experienced. Most technicians have a pretty good idea of how much oil is needed in an oil change for a given engine. That part shouldn't vary. For example, for my other car, the car has a 10L capacity for oil in new engine. Technicians just drain the oil for 30 minutes ... come back, and dump 8L of oil into the engine. There is some 2L of oil that's kinda stuck here and there from before. Then they start the car and read for errors/check the level (if they even do that). The challenge is when someone throws in a deeper oil pan for various reasons, then the engine could be under-oiled. In that case the electronic sensors would pick that up and give you a warning anyway. Besides, it's pretty obvious from the outside if someone has a deeper oil sump from factory if they are staring at these cars every day. Last edited by ramen.slayer; 05-18-2023 at 10:31 PM.. |
