Is there a way to check the car’s head unit model number though the car’s UI? Or is it literally printed on the hardware label itself and that’s it.

You can check the version of the software it’s running and thus the version of hardware by searching for imprint in the idrive help or via the app guide.

Though as I understand it there are a few different head units out there for iDrive 8, depending on model and timing of production.

I’m not sure that’s the case for the X1 only across the BMW range maybe. Don’t forget the X1 has really only had deliveries in the current model year for about 6 months.
