Lightbulb ► F48 -> U11 X1 Brakes

for those that came from f48 x1, how do you feel about the brakes on the u11 x1, in particular the non-msport brakes.

the f48 the brakes were definitely not designed for the size and weight of the car as they were a carry over from mini. brake pad wear was atrocious.

curious to know if the u11 has better brakes and pedal feel.

My wife owns an F48 X1 and I just bought a U11 X1 with the standard brake package.

There’s definitely an improvement in the U11 brakes. The pedal feel is better and even though I don’t beat on the X1’s (M4 GTS for that), hard braking is significantly better in the U11.

My 2024 x1 28i, now with about 3700 miles, is my first BMW. The brakes have probably the best brake feel & stopping distance than any of my previous vehicles over the past 5 decades.

Keep in mind they take about 1000-1200 to break in.

It’s among the vehicles impacted by break recall but to date I’ve not received any system issues. Parts are not available for my vin yet.

speaking of brakes. I have never figured out what these two vents on the front bumper are for. My BMW CA claimed that they were supposed to direct air towards the outside of the front wheels to promote airflow and help cool the brakes. However, I just don't see how that's possible.

For looks only

How the F would that cool the brakes?

My 2019 Acura RDX has similar vents. I was told when I bought it that the vents have 2 objectives. 1. Provide better airflow at front end. 2. Directs air to the tire tread which removes water more quickly when it’s raining.

Don’t know if that’s true but it must cool down something the air is directed to.

My X1 is on 25,927 miles and still on the OEM brake pads, which are approx. 55% worn down!

Compared with my last BMW, which was a Series 2 Active Tourer, (which 'ate' pads and discs) the X1 brakes are a lot better

how do you tell that it's worn down to 55%? (not 60% or 50%?) just wondering.

I love the 2AT. Had one as a rental in Europe last year. Drove it for about a week from Germany to France to Holland and back. Too bad it's not available in the US.

Re: pad wear: I recently (six weeks ago) had new tyres fitted and asked the garage to check the pads for me - it was the figure they quoted to me

Re: 2AT - I did approx. 70k miles and had four absolutely trouble-free years with my 2AT - I really wish now that I had paid the final payment and kept it for another couple of years rather than trading it in for this X1 - the problems I've had with it (including a complete new transmission!), the start-stop hesitation and the interior ergonomics of the X1 drive me mad. Just proves how you can be all to easily wooed by a test drive instead of looking at things objectively.

Case in point: I've just been at the dealer this morning as I saw oil on my drive early last week - they tell me it needs a new seal on the final drive. The car is 18months old.

As soon as I reach the point where I can hand it back without having to owe any money (it is financed on PCP) I'm getting rid of it.

Rant over.

the very first time that I went on a test drive, I experienced the auto stop/start feature while exiting the dealer's parking lot to go on a busy street. I didn't care for that "feature" much. However, I like just about everything else. In the end, I picked the X1 because I liked it more than all the other 7 small SUVs that I tested.(Audi, Mercedes, Acura, Lexus, Volvo, Jaguar, Tesla). No car is perfect and I can live with some faults.

Now I don't even have to think. When I get into my X1, I pressed the engine start button and my hand automatically reaches for the screen. Swipe down and press the short cut. Auto stop/start disabled.

I'm probably just nitpicking here, but I really wish the X1 has heated front windshield like my last car(Land Rover).

My version of X1 does not have the facility to even program a shortcut to kill auto start-stop as the button doesn't exist on the screen in the first place

I was literally cracking open the fortune cookie after eating lunch when I was reading your reply. Look at what it says on the fortune... I almost burst out laughing. Coincidence?
