I had both installed by my local tech guy. Installed a front/rear Thinkware cam and RJ11 jack for the Unidens R3 detector...don't ask me which fuse he tapped though...I wasn't watching whilst he did the install ($155 install fee for both)

Just FYI, saw your build, and since you have Parking Assistance Plus you should also have the Drive Recorder in the apps menu.

Not totally a replacement for a dash cam, but you can set it up to trigger all four cameras around the vehicle to record for up to 40 seconds (20 before the trigger and 20 after) in the event of an impact/accident.

You can also record manually by briefly holding down the park assist button on the console. I also have mine setup to record to a flash drive, but I’m just waiting for the compact flash drive I ordered to come in from Amazon.

When I tried to set it to record from all 4 cameras, it only gave me the option of choosing "Front/Rear" or "Left/Right" cameras?

Thanks to you guys for the info.

I have a question about theft camera. Do I have to arm the vehicle every time I parked the vehicle?

I noticed the option is only for once. If I forgot to manually arm the vehicle in the ID8, I guess the recorder won't be triggered. I wish it was automatic with the parking of the vehicle.

If you have comfort access you can have the car set to automatically lock when you walk away, either with the digital key(except the card) or with the fob.

I tried that auto lock and unlock option, but it annoyed me whenever i walked by and it unlocked for me when I have no intention to get in, so I turned that option off. I rather touch the door handle to do the locking/unlocking.

Anyway, my question earlier was about the use of the theft camera. Do I have to remember to go to ID8 to turn on the theft camera every time I parked the vehicle if I want to arm the vehicle ? Can I turn it on with the My BMW app while away from the vehicle or set it to arm the vehicle automatically after I left and locked the vehicle ?

As far as I know it is active as soon as you lock the car. I didn’t see any setting in iDrive that suggested otherwise.

If you're hoping for some sort of accident recording, it's not as efficient as a dashcam set-up as Cayenne pointed out. You may be disappointed in the results, if/when needed. Dashcams are super cheap these days. The built-in interior cam might be handy snagging a pic of the thief though...but the exterior cams...meh

I'm planning to install Thinkware U1000 dual channel dashcam on my iX1 when I get it.

Shame BMW doesn't have Sentry mode similar to Tesla's as it's the only feature I love about their cars.

Why is it not as efficient? I tried playing around with it today and it seemed alright, though the car does have to be running while it exports to the flash drive.

Perhaps efficient wasn't the right word. I meant that the recording time is not the best (short...20 or 30 seconds) and some members on other forums have noted that either (a) the recording didn't work (whatever the reason) and (b) didn't record sufficient data/views leading up to the accident. In other words...accident occurs, 30 secs or thereabouts are recorded BUT, still the fault is not obvious because details leading up to the accident was perhaps more obvious PRIOR to the 20 or 30 secs.

In any case, as noted, dashcams are cheap these days. Go for it or don't.

Fuse tap for Dashcam

Hi, I took the cover off under the glovebox to reveal the fuses (UK Spc so RH drive, LH glovebox for those of you outside UK.) I considered using the dimming mirror solution but did not want to trust the wire tap and voltage converter shown elsewhere in this thread.

Anyway, nowhere to find the fusecard online/dealer or in the car so i did it by trial and error, see attached the picture shows where i picked up a spare slot next to the yellow fuse alongside the blue square relay. This is power off when the car is locked/alarm armed/asleep but powered at all other times.

The cable was run tucked easily into the roof lining then across the a pillar joint to the roof lining and down under the door seal. All neat and invisible, no disassembly apart from the dashboard left side panel, it’s push fit so easy to remove. With the end panel off and the fuse cover lowered the route is easy and straight through to the fuse box. All done in about 20 mins.

Hope this helps some of you.

Hmm, that's something to think about. I was considering getting a dash cam because of an incident today where a football came bouncing at me while I was doing 65mph on the freeway. Luckily tapping the brakes timed it just right so that the football went under my bumper and tumbled out the back without causing any damage. I constant dash cam would have been perfect for catching this for claims purposes. The about 3 miles later there was a large plastic garbage can in the middle of the freeway causing traffic to come to a screeching halt as people swerved to avoid it. A newer X3 was pulled over to the side of the road with some front end damage a short distance after, so I'm guessing they hit it.

Excellent examples where built-in cams might not have done the trick. I hadn't thought of those. Dashcams are pretty small these days. The ones I have installed on both vehicles are tucked in behind the mirror...can't see them from the driver's seat so they don't impede the view in any way.

Today was a pretty hectic day on the roads as we've just come off a weekend of stormy weather with 40mph gusts. A rockslide near Waimea Bay basically shut down travel on the North Shore for most of the day, plus many people here are pretty crap about properly securing things in the back of their truck. I'll probably end up getting a dash cam, just have to research what will fit my needs the best.

I have a Thinkware F200 with front and rear cams I used in my f32, and it was pretty okay. I imagine running the wires to the rear window may be a pain though.

I had the F200 Pro installed in the x1 (front/rear). I did not do the install for this one, but the wiring isn't that bad. I did the install for my Blackvue 590 2 channel on my x3mc awhile back and was pretty straight forward. If you're not comfortable doing the work yourself, surely there's someone on the island offering the service I should think.

Also, don't get sucked into these 4k cams...not worth the extra cost. 1080p is plenty good for capturing vids. If you're happy with the F200, then stick with that or Blackvue 500 series....sometimes good is good enough!

Since the F32 was a lease I decided on not hard wiring it, just tucked the wires around the windshield and under the dash to the socket under there, and ran the rear cam through the passenger door sill channel and tucked the wires in the rear seat bolster. Not too bad, but I think even though I'm leasing this X1, I'd like to hard wire it just so I can have parking mode. I'm more just wary of opening up the rear hatch so I can pull the wires through to mount the camera since I hate pulling wires through grommets and corrugated looms.

I've got about $100 in rewards and the F200 Pro is on sale for $189 at Best Buy right now so I may end up picking it up sooner than later.

You stated it's "power off when the car is locked/alarm armed/sleep." Does that mean the dashcam turns off when you lock the car? I would want it to still record if someone bumps/hits/vandalizes the car when it's parked somewhere.
