Took delivery of my new X1 sDrive 18i a week ago and discovered that all four USB ports are for charging only. Specifically wanted to be able to play music from a USB stick as phone data is patchy in many places I drive too. Before purchase the Dealer assured me this would be possible and the demo vehicle had a data port and it worked fine. They now say USB data is not available on this model. I say why would anyone want four USB charging ports plus a wireless charger? I am taking the car back to them next week and just hoping they can intal at least one USB data port.

I understand your frustration but if it is wired for power and ground only there is no path to adding data.

Unrelated but similar, they removed the map pockets from seat backs in '25.. equally ridiculous.

Not sure how it is in your specific vehicle, but in USA models, the front two USB-C ports are data capable. They can be used to record footage from Drive Recorder onto them, or use a flash drive to store and play music.

Thanks for that info FlashMonkey929 and that is what I thought. I cannot understand why mine would have four charging ports. I am just hoping the dealer can fit the two data ports next week without too much hassle.

Though I have not used it, unless USA models are different, there is at lease 1 audio usb port according to BMW Guide.

All four ports in my car are branded as power only whereas all videos of the interiors of 2024 X1s that I have seen indicate that the front two should be data ports. not sure why BMW have only given me power ports and hopefully the dealer will tell me more next week.

Does not work on mine. Use Samsung USB-C thumb drive in each of the four ports. Went to media and it was not recognized. If I am doing something wrong please enlighten me.

I don’t use the thumb drives for music, I use them to record from Drive Recorder. Do you have that option in yours?
It’s starting to sound like maybe the feature may have been omitted in newer models…..

I spent ages trying to get my ipod to work. there is a long thread about that somewhere. Early models had one of the front ports were wired for data but it seams to have disappeared from the later models. There are some pictures of the ports with the front cupholders removed and it confirmed as wired for power only. Another disappointing cost cutting no doubt.

I have two X1s on order so I can't physically confirm anything yet but trying to find out from available info what the deal is with this since I'm also accustomed to using a USB drive for music... that section of the owner's manual does just say charging but if you search for USB audio it will refer you to the navigation and entertainment manual ~ which itself isn't really clear (i'm paraphrasing but it says something like depending on the vehicle)... however on the bmwusa.com website under the features > connectivity for both the 28i and m35i it says "USB audio connection and hands-free Bluetooth® wireless technology including Audio Streaming"

I have a 2025 X1 M35, all my USB ports only have a power symbol.
I can't get any of the ports to work with my music USB sticks. Very strange. You think BMW would have said something.

Latest Online guide still states my 24 x1 28, made in November 2023, still has data & charging capabilities in both Fronts & only charging in the rears. That’s what it shows in print as well as printed above each usb-c port.

In the two images that Markronnie posted above it clearly indicates that the two front ports should be data ports by the icons and the two in the rear are power only. Mine (built July 24) has all four icons showing power only , no data. The problem I have is that when I purchased the car I was quite specific in wanting data ports in the fromt and was assured that the car would have them. Interesting to see what the dealer does for me next week.

I wonder whether the change is an OS-9 thing - it has an Android based head unit rather than the old Linux one. Maybe the new hardware doesn't have the incoming ports.

Does anyone have OS-9 and data enabled front USB ports?

Yes my 2024 was among the first built with ID9 last November 2023 & has Data USB for both front USB-C ports. At least they are marked as they do & current on line manual says it does.
