right screen is all black with "BMW" in the center / doesn't turn on (replaced TWICE)

(update: see post #21 below.... after less than a month, the entire thing is being replaced for the second time today)

I walked into my garage today and before I unlocked the X1, I immediately noticed something weird. I saw the right screen displaying "BMW" in small white letter in the center. I unlocked the door and it made no changes.

I turned on the engine and it continued to display only those 3 letters.(seen pic below) The screen behind the screen was normal. I turned off the engine, locked the car and started again. After several tries, the "BMW" still remained on that screen.

The car could be driven, but without the right screen, I couldn't even control the AC.

I called BMW roadside assistance and after diagnosing pretty much everything, they said that I needed to bring the car to the dealer. The problem is that the nearest dealer is more than 2 hours away. The BMW guy on the phone did say that he could arrange to have the car towed to the dealer. He said he contacted a BMW master technician who said that the screen or the system needed to be reset by the dealer... could not be done by the driver? Since the car could still be driven, I decided to wait.

A couple of hours later, the screen became normal again after I was done shopping at Home Depot. Everything was normal until I stopped by a restaurant to pick up dinner. When I got back into the car, the right screen was totally dark, not even the "BMW" being displayed. After I got home, I turned the car off and restarted it again... still nothing but a black right screen.

I unloaded the car and went inside. I just went to the car in the garage again.. turned on the engine and the right screen was normal again.

Unfortunately, after I got out of the car again and locked it, I was the "BMW" being displayed on the right screen again. (left screen turned off) I waited half an hour can went to the garage again. The car was still locked, but the "BMW" was still being displayed. I restarted the car and turne and turned if off..... then it went away. Locked the car and both screens were off again....

Has anyone encountered something like this? I really don't want to drive 4 hours round trip to the dealer for something "minor" like this... although it could also be considered major, since the AC and navigation could not be controlled at all.

Thanks!

I used to get this on my 328 iDrive screen. After 30 seconds, it would reboot and function fine after that.

That was the first thing I tried before calling BMW for help. I've done the hard reset last month when I was trying to get Driving Assistant Plus trial to start working.

I wonder if the hot weather here may have caused this. It was around 96 here today.

You can also do this 3 times in a row by holding the volume roller for 30 seconds each time, which is like a "harder" reset....

the "BMW" thing on the screen has been on since last night and I was unable to make it go away... even with the doors locked. so I showed up at the dealership first thing in the morning.

been sitting here at the dealership for the last 3 hours. the techs were unable to fix or reset it. about an hour ago, I looked though the window to the service bay and noticed that 5 techs were hovering over my X1 trying to figure something out. They even had the battery and a bunch of other stuff removed from the car.

The service advisor came out later and said that they were working very hard and even had BMW people on the phone trying to diagnose the problem. He said there was a very high chance that they may have to replace the "headunit" with a replacement. Not sure if he meant the screen or whatever device was controlling the infotainment screen. They would not be able to give me a loaner because the parts manager informed them that the wait for the part was at least 6 to 8 weeks. However, he told me to wait for another hour or so while they try again.

On the way to the dealership early this morning, it was around 89 degrees outside. I was unable to control the AC because the screen was blank(except for the "BMW" in the middle) It got real warm because I probalby had the AC at 72 with the fan at the lowest setting the last time. A couple of exits before arriving at the dealership, I realized that I could control it with void...("Hello BMW, lower the temperature... increase fan speed")

Edit: the service manager came out and said that they and BMW both agreed that the "glitch" was not something that they could simply reset. So the system would be replaced. They are giving me a Hertz rental car because they couldn't let me have a BMW loaner for more than 4 weeks. He said my X1 was not really usable or safe... not being able to use the AC was one thing, but he said that it also meant that if there were other warning messages, I would not be able to see anything.(TPMS, for example) Now they are just waiting for the Hertz guy to bring a rental(some kind of small Chevrolet SUV?) in about 10 minutes.

Oh man I really feel for you, that sucks. The worst nightmare and shows the major downside of the hi tech systems if they melt down. Hope it gets sorted soon for you.

Last year I had an Enterprise rental for a body shop repair, and they had a 330 on the rental lot. Crossing fingers they can hook you up with something like that, and not a Versa....

The Hertz guy brought a Chevy Tahoe. The BMW service manager told him to put down 4 weeks in the rental period. It's very clean, but has a lot of miles(almost 40,000 miles). Going home now.. (2 hour drive) Not sure if this is something new, but the BMW dealer gave me a $25 Panera gift card for my troubles.

The "good" thing is that the service manager promised to have my X1 delivered to my home via flatbed as soon as the replacement screen/headunit was complete.(then the flatbed will take the Hertz rental back to them) At least I won't have to make another 4-hour roundtrip. They said my X1 was the second one that they had encountered with this exact same issue.

Maybe it's me... last week, I accidentally allowed my PC to update from Windows 10 to Windows 11.(something that I never wanted, but I accidentally pressed ok when it asked me) After it was updated to Windows 11, my PC was basically bricked. At boot-up, the only thing that I got was the blue screen of death.(with boot error message) After hours of trying, I ended up having to reset my PC back to factory default to get back to Windows 10. Fortunately, no data was lost, but I had to reinstall all of my apps.

We had the same exact problem but only for one instance thus far. Went away after exiting and locking the car for a short time. Hopefully it doesn't return.

I also had it once. After stopping and restarting it was ok.
The HUD still doesn’t work for me. Waiting for parts.
Slowly I have the idea what temperature does to everthing on or under the dashboard? Both of these things happened to me at high outside temps > 30 deg. Celsius.

Regards, Marcel

I sincerely hope that it's not caused by hot temperature. I've only had my X1 for 2 months. It has been relatively cool during those 2 months. Since last week, the weather got really hot, around 95 to 97 degrees. (35 degrees Celsius!) If I park inside my garage, it can reach 100 with the door closed. If I park outside under the sun, the it can easily reach 130 degrees or more.(almost 55 Celsius)

Oh no this is rubbish, not great it’s happened a few times to other customers either. Hope it’s sorted quicker than their estimate, maybe you could push to get BMW to source one from another car in the US?

Touch screen controlled cars are all fine until they aren’t, buttons can be great if it’s just the screen element that fails, but if the rest of the control unit has a brain fart then that’s that.

Keep us updated on progress, fingers cross for a speedy resolution.

service manager told me that there was a slight chance that they could have the parts shipped via FedEx from Germany directly to the dealership in the US. (assuming that they could locate available parts) If not, then it'll be 3 to 4 weeks. Waiting to hear back from the on Monday or Wednesday. Everything is closed here on Tuesday because of a certain holiday(due to a certain American holiday that's not celebrated in England?)

got the X1 back this morning... everything seemed normal. (they had it brought to me via flatbed and took the Hertz loaner away, saving me 4+ hours of driving roundtrip)

However, I couldn't really tell what parts they replaced. The service advisor said that BMW shipped the required parts via overnight(FedEx?) from Germany directly to their parts dept two days ago.

probably unrelated... but now my low windshield washer fluid warning message won't go away... even after I refilled it to near the top.

hopefully I just have to drive it for a little longer before the car figures out that the washer fluid reservoir is now full?

does "sorted" mean the same thing in England? because my X1 is definitely not "sorted"

My X1 is currently at the dealer and the entire curved screen is being replaced AGAIN! (the screen and the computer or the control units were replaced just a few weeks ago) the lasted less than 3 weeks before going blank with black screen on me again and the dealer couldn't fix it, so they decided to replace it again... even BMW approved the job... AGAIN... hey, at least the pandemic parts shortage must be over if they just get replacement screens and computers so quickly... again....

also.... lane departure warning has gone kaput last week and the dealer couldn't solve it. They are also going to look at it today. The tech said that it could be the cameras that needed replacing. Fortunately, without lane departure waning, the car is still drivable.(but Driving Assistance Plus adaptive cruise control cannot be engaged of course)

lastly, the automatic emergency brakes also needed checking because it would activate for no reason even when reversing slowly in a completely empty shopping mall parking lot.(but only randomly) The tech drove and I sat in the passenger seats. His reaction was "oh... wow... never seen any BMW do that before!"

I'm so glad that my X1 is serving as a guinea pig and cash cow for the BMW dealer's service dept. Perhaps they'll give me a certificate of appreciation soon? It's never a good sign that the service advisor and the BMW tech know me so well that they remember my cell phone number by heart.

Yes sorted does mean the same here. You are not having much luck at all.

Re the washer fluid mine came up last week I put about a pint of water in and the warning went away without having to drive it.
