Info on the next batch of iDrive software updates has been shared by BMW. For those of us with iDrive 8/MGU21, there are quite a few updates we won’t be getting.

Yes - eventually. From what I’ve read, software updates first deploy to dealers for on site update, then over the air a few months after that.

Does anybody understand how do these 3 definitions correlate in BWM products:

- Service pack number
- MGU number
- iDrive version

Seems Service Pack is about hardware installed. MGU is also about hardware installed(found CPU, RAM specs online). And finally iDrive version is about software that can be installed on a particular hardware.

Any documentation?

It may not even relate to the X1 at all. As far as I can tell Service Pack 18 was on the i4 and was superseded by SP21 found on the iX and the 2 Series Active Tourer (but not the coupe). I'm just GUESSING, but I think X1's (iDrive 8) share a lot of similarities as the 2AT so we might be on SP21, and thus those notes may not apply since they specifically mention SP18 vehicles.

If you have a 23 x1 (U11) then you have iDrive8 on the MGU21 head unit running service pack 21. The exception being recent UK ICE vehicles that are piloting iDrive 9.

These updates are for vehicles running iDrive 8 (this PDF does not pertain to iDrive 9), and mentions for each update which vehicle, hardware, and service pack are required.

You can determine which updates apply to your vehicle and which do not.

A lot of the notes apply to MGU22 though, is that not iDrive9?

For the MGU21, were you referring to delivered vehicles or all vehicles (delivered and being built, as long as its 2023? ?

MGU22 is a newer, more powerful head unit that some models have that currently runs iDrive 8. Models with MGU22 are eligible for the iDrive 8.5 upgrade.

23 X1s have MGU21, thus no upgrade to iDrive 8.5/features that require 8.5.

It’s unclear what head unit the UK ICE X1s with iDrive 9 have. Maybe MGU22 but more likely MGU23 (or IDC23 with new naming convention) or a variation of MGU22. All X1s will have this head unit running iDrive 9 come November production.

So, basically, start stop improvement is not our story according to this booklet, because it is for SP18. Sad.
