Apple CarPlay and Bluetooth issue

Over the past week the X1 will intermittently not recognize my iPhone ( v 13, iOS16.6). The Bluetooth on the phone says connected but the X1 says cannot connect and at least once said the Bluetooth version was incompatible. Have rebooted the phone multiple times and restarted the car. Not consistent but aggravating. No recent iOS updates as far as I know.

I saw this incompatible message this week. Only the once. Not sure how I fixed it. Just started working when I got back in the car after work.

I think we have seen this it seems to get in a paddy after me driving the car and then my wife driving it. We don’t use different profiled and out iOS versions are the same but phones different. She has had to unselect the Apple car play and then reselect it and it’s fixed it each time.

If just she drives it it doesn’t happen.

Same thing happened with ours. Nothing we did would get it to connect, but on the next drive cycle it started working on its own. Some kind of bug for sure.

I've had a number of times where only BT would connect, and not CarPlay, unless I manually went into the app to tell it to connect.

But I've never seen this issue.

It just seems random. Odd thing was that at one point the CarPlay was running and the Bluetooth on the phone said the X1 was disconnected. Are the two connections in competition? I assumed the CarPlay was connecting through Bluetooth.

CarPlay uses both Bluetooth and wifi to make a connection with the car. Mine will disconnect every once in a few months and not be able to reconnect until I start the car again. I’ve learned to just live with it, it happened the same on my ‘20 4 series too.

I have this occasionally, most recently it wouldn’t reconnect the following day so I held the volume scroller down until the screens rebooted and then it connected fine.

Didn’t know about the reboot ability. Thanks.

I have concluded the new software operating system is supplied with your own personal Gremlin, which chooses which way to torment you on any particular day.

I will be installing a Gremlin Bell as they do on Harley Davidsons.

For those unaware the purpose of the GB. Gremlins like to hitch a ride, when the bell rings this hurts their ears and they cover them with their hands resulting in them immediately falling off......problem solved.

Yes I also believe if you have multiple drivers the operating system gets confused....shouldn't.

I can walk past our X1 several times during the day with my iPhone 14 in my pocket, the chime rings 3 times, doors unlock when approaching, then chimes and locks when I get past........Sometimes

Sometimes the mirrors fold in when locking and sometimes it doesn't. It appears to be the vehicle software/firmware and not the MyBMW App.

Apparently we have a bit of an issue when she gets in the car on a call, it doesn’t connect the Apple CarPlay properly. It does connect to the Bluetooth fine, but once in the car other things don’t work. If she gets in and then makes a call everything is fine.

So an issue that needs sorting in a future update with any luck. She hasn’t tried to reconnect whilst in the car, she finds it a pain using the screen whilst driving and voice commands often try to take her to a destination to to what she thinks the menu should be called.

Could really do with a list of spoke instructions that help from BMW.

I had the same issue intermittently for a while. Super annoying.
I just got a firmware flash to 07/2023.45 at the dealer and hoping it’s now fixed 🤞

Has Anyone Solved the Bluetooth / CarPlay Problem on BMW Xis?

The last post I saw was August 2023. I'm just experiencing this problem now on my new X1. CarPlay worked perfectly until it didn't. No rebooting has resolved the problem. How do I fix this?

not sure if there's an official fix....

whenever it happens to me, I just delete the phone from the car. (and delete the car from the phone's bluetooth menu) start fresh. that almost always solved it. although I only had to do this maybe 3 times during the last 7 months.

both of my iPhones are now on iOS 17.2

Remains random and annoying. I can go a couple of weeks with no trouble and then it can happen several times in a day. Sometimes the message says the Bluetooth is not compatible. The deletion/ reconnection works when I don’t get that message.

the current iOS version is 17.2.1, but you didn't mention which iPhone you have, so I don't know if it can be updated to 17.2.1

Did you try deleting/forgetting the connection on both the phone and car? (to start fresh like you just took delivery of the X1) It may take a couple of tries. That's how I resolved it when the same thing happened to me just a couple of weeks ago. (iPhone 12 Mini and iPhone 15 Pro Max, both on iOS 17.2.1)

updating to 17.2.1 did not solve the issue, my car is with the dealer now for a "supposed" update that is meant to remedy the connectivity issue, amongst other things.

Should have mentioned this: iPhone 13 with software 17.1.2. ( will update today). I have deleted and reconnected the phone more than once but can try again. Thanks for the good thoughts.

I have now tried Apple CarPlay in 3 different X1 M35’s. All three drop the connection within minutes of use. I have confirmed it is not the phone (iPhone 15 Pro Max with latest iOS). Apple CarPlay works well on our two other vehicles with ID7, and our X1 loaner with ID8 and another 330i loaner with ID8. Also work with no issues on a friend’s i4 with ID8.

This seems like a systemic issue with ID9 at the moment. Hopefully BMW will figure this out sooner than later.

Based on my experience with BMW motorcycles.....highly unlikely. When you get to the right tech at BMW they admit their hardware does not play well with Apple iPhones. They kept doing patches but never resolved the issue.....To the point I stopped pairing my iPhone to the motorcycle and used the iPhone directly with my headset.

It appears to be the same problem here

So we have the same problem. We bought a new iPhone 15 proax, which was working fine. Until one day it started to have these Bluetooth issues. Apple car play will not connect. Will only play blutooth audio. Have no idea what is going on. My android works fine, and I have the latest fold 5. Can anyone advise what the hell is going on with my apple car play please?

I noticed something on trip this week. When using Apple Maps, if you want to display the map in the instrument panel, the display defaults to showing the overall route. In order to get it zoomed in, I needed to toggle the button on the infotainment screen to show the full route--when that screen went full route, the IP screen zoomed in; and then vice-versa. It didn't used to do this - must have been one of the recent software updates.
