Cup holder replacement

Thanks to the information from SpaceSilverX1, I replaced the UK spec cup holders. We regular use the cup holders and it's particularly annoying when using metal chilly bottles! Decided to bite the bullet and replace them. Only took 10 minutes.

After removing the 2 screws at the bottom, it just needed a couple of trim tools to lift it free of the clips.

£100 at today's exchange rate is USD$126.

People who have read my other posts know that I usually make really long replies...

Now I'm speechless and can't think of what to say.

I’d much rather see drinks holders incorporated in the doors and do something cleaner design wise with the space that frees up. I find them aesthetically ugly and when (like me) you don’t use them they just become a dirt trap inconvenience…

I might need to do this - whenever we put water bottles in they shake around a lot when going around corners at a decent pace

Call me a cheapskate, but I just got some black self-adhesive foam strip, and stuck it all around the perimeter of the two cupholders - it works a treat! Certainly didn't cost £100!

What prompted you to replace them? What's different/better about the replacement unit?

We here in the US and Canada have the "better" cupholders with the three spring-loaded prongs to keep the bottles nice and tight.

Folks in the UK, Germany, Europe and the rest of the world have the other kind, which causes the water bottles to move around while driving.

Of course, the cheaper solution is to buy bigger water bottles.

Wish BMW had gone for just a rectangular tray with detachable cup holders instead. It would be much more beneficial for me to have a tray to put the key or my wallet, as I never really use cup holders in cars.

I was thinking the same thing. I never have drinks in my car, unless it's a long drive(500 miles or longer).

The only things that I put in my X1's cupholders are sunglasses, phone, key fob, and sometimes a jar of Bonne Maman strawberry preserve.

The cupholders in the X1 are ridiculously large and without the adaptive prongs to hold cups in place, a typical water bottle (kids mainly have metal chilly bottles) or coffee will either rattle about or tip over.

It was so annoying, there was no way we could put up with this every day.

Although it cost £100, I expect I'll get around half of it back when the lease expires in 3 years.

Apart from the aircon, it was the only thing I didn't like about the car

I see... The last time I returned a leased SUV, I spent almost two days taking out all the aftermarket stereo out and putting the original stuff back in.(had to take apart almost every interior panel and doors)

Fortunately it only takes a few minutes to switch out.

When we sold the last car to get this one, it worked out cheaper to leave the hidden dashcam battery and cabling and just order new ones than to have them removed.

Thanks for sharing! Which pry tools did you use? Did you have to use it for the front and back of the cup holder?
