I sure hope BMW does not start charging for map updates at any point. I made the mistake several years ago paying $150 for a 2014 Acura RDX Mao update that came on a CD. I saw no changes at all in content in the areas I drive.

Acura had provided OTA map updates free for 3 years in my 2019 RDX. With free navigation apps available that are continuously getting free updates, & the ability to project the map from phone to the BMW infotainment system, why would anyone pay a subscription free??

the ConnecteDrive shows that map updates are only free for 4 years.... so I assume that they will ask me to pay after that?

It’s only free for 3 years in the UK.

So iDrive 8 has map updates which are downloaded to the car. iDrive 9 does not. Since all map info for iDrive 9 is cloud based, one would assume it is continually updated...but who knows.

But not quite given there are plenty alternatives.
I wonder if this 1981 Honda Gyro-Cator Navigation System can still work....

forgot that the driver had to put map slides for each area before driving. talk about ancient technology!

Apologies for the question, I still don't have the car and I am trying to understand how it works.
Related to online maps, how do you usually connect the car to internet? Is it possible to do like bluetooth tethering from the smartphone, so that the car is getting connected as soon there is an established bt connection with the phone?
Or is e-sim the only way to connect the car to internet?

The car has its own 4g sim card. I don't think it is even possible to tether your phone's data connection to the car.

You DO NOT NEED any data plan to get the Sat Nav to work on any BMW, today or last week or last year.

OMG a tiny bit of knowledge is a dangerous thing.

Thanks for your reply. So the car has its own 4G sim embedded (or 4g non-configurable e-sim at this point) where you don't pay any subscription, right? And has it connectivity worldwide? So, is it always connected to internet, in a way? I assume that for navigation and data transfer, even 1 or 2 Mbps is enough.
I don't have the car yet, but what functions can you use in this case?
Can you disable alarm from the app? Or check and change status of lock/unlock from remote?

Yes, app is very feature rich and fast to update.
