How does the Guest Profile work?
I read the info in the manual and the info at https://faq.bmwusa.com/s/article/FAQ...language=en_US but still wondering how the Guest Profile works.
For example, if we have another person drive the car, do they need to have one of the physical key fobs to operate the vehicle? If so, what stops the vehicle from recognizing the respective key fob being used and defaulting to my or spouse's profile?

You can send/lend a digital key from your phone for somebody to use the car.
You could also lend them a key (card or regular physical key) that may not be associated to a profile. IF the key they get is associated with the profile, the car will believe that user is using the car. If the key they get is not associated with any profiled, the car will ask which profile to use. If an existing profile is selected, a bar code has to be scanned by a phone with the corresponding digital key to validate the user. Saved profiles along with the guest profile will show up as options. If no profile is selected, certain functions are not available. From that perspective, it may be more appropriate not to associate a profile to a physical key when the usual drivers have set up a digital key on their phone. This way, your profile data is protected when you lend the physical key. I have not tested what happens when you lend/send a digital key from your phone. I guess the sent digital key is a blank key. |

Just curious what everyone else does when they have family visiting.

My X1 came with a digital card (a sort of black credit card sized key).
It can be used like a regular key. If you don't want to set a digital key and your 2 keys are already assigned to a profile, your visitor could use the digital card maybe. |

I have that as well but have not set it up yet. It may be just as easy to let them use one of our keys (unless they change any personal preferences such as seat settings etc...)

I was wondering this also - particularly when we valet in NYC. They usually take the key and hang it on a board, so the card might not be a great option. I guess we could unlink one of the keys from a profile before handing it over. Valet option would've been great.

On iOS, go to the digital car key in your wallet app and click on the share icon in the top right corner.

Black or white, what is the difference?
Seriously though, these things are expensive. I had to replace the original one after I lost my wallet. Around $100 just to get the replacement card. I need it because I practice windsurfing and kitesurfing and the physical keys are bulky and have to be protected from water. With the card, no problem. |
