Do Your Newer X1s Rattle?
I have driven German cars since I began driving. I had many VW GTIs before moving to BMW 3 series cars, and I currently drive a 330.
Throughout the years I have become used to, I guess, the foibles or whatever that seem to come with German cars, once of which is the rattling and sometimes excess and odd creaks here and there. My latest 3 series, the 330 is the most quiet one I've ever had. It really seems to be put together well, such there is a minimum of hard plastic surfaces that will rub against each other. The steering wheel is about the only thing that seems to creak when I look at it wrong. I am seriously considering an x1 M35i for my next car. I will be driving one soon, and conducting my own testing, but I am wondering what current owners have, if anything, to say about any excess noise in the cabin. I know this vehicle appears to be the lowest rung on the BMW ladder, but does that make it worse in terms of how its put together? I realize there are many more significant and pressing issues that make or break an experience one has with a certain car, but so far, and based on my research, I am ok with losing my iDrive wheel and turning off the start/start every time I get in. The turbo lag and issues I hear about the transmission are things I will just have to figure out for myself. But what about the "fit and finish?" Short version: "Does the '24+ x1 Rattle inside or have multiple bizarre creaks/snaps going on?" Thanks in advance to all the wise folk who may choose to answer! Tim |

Ok no rattles no squeaks, but I've only had it a week. So not much good info.
To be honest I like it better than I thought. AC is ice cold I always thought Lexus had the best AC. Ride a tad on the firm side, I'm ok with that and more importantly the wife is. I think the screen menus are kinda of a mess. Being in software for 40 years, looks like they designed from the bottom up. Good thing is most functions can be voice controlled. Better mileage than I thought, although I drive on the slow side but. always good to some nice acceleration. When I ask "hello BMW" for the oil pressure it responds oil ok, oh I hate that. My MB tells me oil pressure, oil temp and level of oil. Maybe that info is buried somewhere I just haven't found it. I really miss the old oil dipstick!! Tire pressure was another weird thing, car door said 33 psi front and rear ok. When I asked BMW what were the tire pressures, the screen said it should be 36 psi front and 35 rear. Now that was confusing. BTW I have 19 tires running Continental tires. That's my 2 cents, I would recommend the car. What was a really strange thing I found out today. So I can unlock/lock car and drive the car with my phone. So I got out of the car it locked, but the key was still inside, thought no car would lock with key inside. Minor issue but didn't seem logical. good luck! |

I've had my 2024 X1 since mid June and haven't noticed any odd sounds at all.
I've been almost completely pleased with it. My only issues are generally around iDrive 9 and the lack of wheel/everything touchscreen, but in the grand scheme of things, they're mostly minor. |

Yes, roughly after 5 months forward more and more rattles coming from different places. First one was from in front of the front passenger, then the Driver's side B-pillar, and now the right side C pillar (rear) is also making sound.

I’ve had mine since April and live in the UK, mines an M Sport with the 25e engine.
So far so good, with the only exception being the drivers seat which I will be getting the dealer to look at. I always find that if cars are going to rattle and squeak they do so more over the winter months when it’s cold, not sure where you are but if rattles are going to arise in mine, it will be in over the next few months, that said they do feel very well put together.. I came from Audi prior to this car so I’m used to the odd rattle or two. The M sports have noticeably hard suspension as I’m sure you already know so that won’t help rattle wise. Had mine since January of 23, the only noise I have that persists is a crack sound that comes from the passenger side of the dash after parking in the hot sun for a while, and then cooling the car down. Happens once during the drive, doesn't happen again until the next time the interior gets hot. I'm not too bothered by it, as it's likely just materials contracting due to the rapid cooldown.

One of my 3 series cars had strange noises coming from pillar areas that I was never really able to diagnose. I tried cleaning/lubricating the various foam/rubber areas but that never really helped.

And here is sort of the million dollar answer to a question I didn't yet ask. My wife is oddly sensitive to harsh rides, coming from her years of driving Hondas and their softer ride. I don't like getting beat up, but even with the larger wheels and awful RFT on my 330 it isn't SO bad, hopefully the x1 is better or not worse. I blame the RFTs for a lot of the issues, as after years of driving with them, I swear I can feel them degrading as I drive.

my X1(2023) with M sport suspension has been pretty quiet. The only noise that kind of bothers me is coming the flexing noise from the roof or panoramic sunroof glass when I drive over large speed bumps slowly.
the last dealer loaner that I drove was a 2023 X3. It had less than 500 miles and had so many squeaks and rattles inside. Sounded like every panel was rubbing against each other. Although it was in the middle of winter with temperatures around 15.(F) my friend has been driving Teslas for the last 10 years. his current one is a Model Y. The other day we were driving to Germantown. It was the first time that he sat in my X1. He said "how many miles can you get on one single charge?" He was genuinely surprised when I replied "this thing runs on 100% gasoline only!" Then again, most car cabins are nice and rattle-free compared to Tesla Y or 3? 2024 X1 M35i.....a resounding YES on rattles.... EVERYWHERE!
Had my '24 M35i since the end of March. So many rattles and noises I'm in contact with BMW North America to try and get a buy back. 4th time at the dealer for noises and rattles. This current appointment is putting me over the 30 day mark.
Started with the pano roof. That thing makes so much noise. Every bump or uneven road make the pano roof move around a make noise. Then it's just random parts that decide to make noise one day and nothing the next. Weird rattle sound behind the vents on the passenger side. Weird "loose" noises coming from everywhere in the rear area. Usually the first drive every warm day, literally all the plastics in the car snap and pop for the first few minutes. Then it got a little colder. Not cold, just colder. Upper 40s to lower 50s at night. Entire center floating console makes a horrible and LOUD rattle noise until the day, not the car, warms up. Charging area had a horrible rattle noise as well. Also doesn't subside until the temps outside get above 70. Weird rattle noise coming from the rear passenger seat belt area. The part where it retracts into. The whole interior is starting to feel loose with every bump. It's barely over 6 months old. There are other noises that I've yet to locate and identify. We have taken absolutely EVERYTHING out of the car to ensure it wasn't just some personal items making noise. There is nothing in it. The odd thing is....every once in a while it will have a "quiet day". Then the next day, bam....right back to weird noises and rattles from everything. It's strange that each rattle or noise seems to be temperature dependent. Some only happen when cold. Some only happen when warm. That makes me think it's cheap, poorly constructed materials. I can't wait to get out of this thing. I didnt spend all this money to buy what essentially sounds like a used car that's already been worn in. I bought a brand new BMW.....not a 20 yr old Chevy. The noises in mine aren't subtle. The problem though, is on mine they took months to show up. Here is my center console area when the temp gets to around 50 degrees outside.

Have you taken your car in for that noise? I know they are famous for being UNABLE TO RECREATE sounds but that is crazy. |

It's at the dealer now for those noises. It's previously been in the shop 3 other times for noises. Mainly the pano roof, for a total of around 26 or 27 days. This 4th visit will put me solidly past 30 days in the shop in just over 6 months of ownership. Lemon law territory.
I'm guessing that I got a Monday morning or a Friday afternoon car. Regardless, so much stuff has to be taken apart to fix this stuff, I don't want the car back. The other visits alone had the headliner dropped, interior pillars removed, entire pano roof removed etc... many times as they tried to diagnose and "fix" the pano roof noise (which is still there) that I think it's causing some of the "loose" sounds coming from the rear area. I didn't buy a new car to have it taken apart so many times. Now all these other areas need to be taken apart.....it's ridiculous. |

Mostly yes. Most cars rattle even million dollar cars can rattle. It’s who’s willing to fix the issue the question you need to be asking. Bmw is a hit or miss when it comes to rattles. It really depends on the staff at your dealership if their willing to go far and beyond to find that rattle. Mine just shrugs and says they can’t hear it.

I absolutely agree with that statement and I even told them that. They had to drop the headliner many times to try and fix the pano roof noises that I'm positive some of the "loose" noises showing up are from that process. I told them that on my test drive with the tech on Tues.
Thankfully they were able to reproduce the really bad rattles/noises from the center floating console and the charging area yesterday. They weren't sure what to even replace to fix that issue. To be honest, I have no idea how they are going to fix that OR how much MORE of the interior they will have to take apart to figure it out. Which is going to cause more noise issues in the long run. Roughly 1/6th of the time I've owned this car, it's been in the shop. That’s assuming of course you can afford to, chopping a car in for rattles is a first world problem isn’t it but it sounds like you’ve had issue after issue with rattles, my patience would have long since ran out.
