Yankees first team to top $1 billion in Forbes valuation

NEW YORK (AP) -- The New York Yankees became the first baseball team valued at more than $1 billion in the annual estimates made by Forbes magazine.

The Yankees' value increased 8 percent to $1.026 billion, the magazine estimated in its May 8 issue, which was released Thursday. New York had revenue of $354 million last year before paying $77 million in revenue sharing and $34 million in luxury tax.

Forbes estimated the Yankees had a $50 million operating loss before interest, income taxes, depreciation and amortization.

The Boston Red Sox were pegged with the second-highest value at $617 million, followed by the New York Mets ($604 million), Los Angeles Dodgers ($482 million), Chicago Cubs ($448 million) and Washington Nationals ($440 million).

Tampa Bay was last among the 30 teams at $209 million.

Forbes valued three NFL teams last September at $1 billion or higher: the Washington Redskins ($1.26 billion), Dallas Cowboys ($1.06 billion) and New England Patriots ($1.04 billion).

Cleveland had the highest estimated operating income at $34.6 million, followed by Houston at $30.2 million, Toronto at $29.7 million, Washington at $27.9 million, Atlanta at $27.6 million.

Other than the Yankees, the only teams with estimated operating losses were the Red Sox ($18.5 million), the Mets ($16.1 million), Florida ($11.9 million) and the Los Angeles Angels ($2.6 million).

I hate the Yankees since I am a die hard met fan - however, I still go to yankee games because there is no other Stadium, Arena, complex, theatre like it in the world.

Go to a playoff game there with hot seats once and you'll be addicted...

I really enjoy being at Yankee Stad. and watching their games, even though I dislike the team and their morals.

The kid of the st. from me, father is really connected wth the yanks, and he was the head ballboy, he made 45 g's a year, and if they won the world series another 40 g's but he hasnt been on yet for a series.

He says A-Rod is the biggest jerk in baseball, and I agree.

Met Fan here. A lot of people around here say "I like both the Mets and the Yankees" I find that total BS. You're either one fan or the other you can't be both. It's physically impossible. I can't understand it. If you have a passion for one team then everyone else is the enemy.
Some enemys you just dislike more than others. IE : Yankees.

I don't hate any teams really. I'm a Yankees fan, but I don't hate the Red Sox. People may not consider me a true fan because of the fact that I don't hate them.

I'll still talk trash about them though.

Nikki comes from the home of the GREAT Florida Marlins who buy world series banners. Then have the annual firesale during the winter because they cant find anybody 2 fill up the ballpark. It doesnt really matter what u think living in florida because your crappy franchise will be sold and moved to las vegas within a few years. Im from New York where sports is all about rivalry and nothing else. NEW YORK METS 20 year anniversary baby. AMAZINS will be 06' world champs! please believe it, believe it please!
