You can see the tach if you change what's displayed in the instrument cluster using the right side of the steering wheel to go through the options. I have mine set this way in Personal mode as the default on startup.

Also, I have my instrument cluster displaying my average and instant fuel consumption while driving normally, and switching between sport mode or flipping the paddle to S while preparing to merge on the freeway will instantly increase consumption according to the instant MPG readout.

Stand corrected...although doesn't really explain what I saw earlier on the tach, but hey, I'm outnumbered

Personally I think the root cause of the issue is related to a throttle tip-in programming issue that is made worse by a wonky ASS system. The reason I say that is because the car is still a half second too slow to react at slow speeds, even in Sport mode. It's like the first 10% of the throttle is not being registered by the ECU, then reaches a certain threshold and kicks forward unnaturally.

The ASS system is a complete mess. Because it kills the engine early, it makes stop and go traffic a nightmare, creating at times an audible clunk as the car figures out that it needs to refire the engine a millisecond after shutting it off.

I love the nearly everything about the car....except this, and I cannot fathom how this throttle behavior was allowed to pass the R&D stage.

Exactly what I've been saying for months now. Just by seeing how much of a difference is made by switching from D to S you can see how much better throttle response changes instantly, so it must be a programming issue.

I can't agree with you more.

Every single time that I drive into my garage, the engine stop and restarts at least twice, some times three times, all within a distance of about 20 feet. I don't always remember to disable engine auto stop/start when I drive... but I always know that it's working when I drive into my garage!

I'll try to shoot video when I find a safe straightaway.

In personal mode you can adjust the display to show a tach on the right side of the screen. In sport mode it should show it by default. I'm assuming you mean in sport mode or personal mode. Turning ASS on won't change the tach or shift points, it's using Sport Mode to disable ASS that changes my shift points and revs.

DITTO - my engine often stops when I brake to essentially a stop to make the left turn into my driveway over the storm drain channel that sits between my driveway and the road, when I crawl the last bit while my garage door finishes opening, and usu. stops when I try to essentially stop to finish creeping into my spot and just gently bump the parking aid (piece of 2x4 on the floor). I'm glad I have the extended service contract, because I'm betting that starter motor will be worn out shortly after the standard warranty expires.

I also have the BMW extended warranty.... up to 7 years or 100,000 miles, whichever comes first.... even so, I think the starter motor or something related will go bad a week after the extended warranty expires.

oh well, I'll just have to disable ASS whenever possible.

Worse, the common "fix" is to run the cars in sport mode which creates a heck of a lot more CO2 (at least in my case) than the Stop-Start feature is saving.

I'm not against the feature, but BMW could have done a lot better job of implementing the feature in the '23 X1.
The dct hesitation along with stop
Start is dangerous on this car.

Makes the car feel “broken”. I swear it’s not worth saving 5 percent of your fuel but almost causing accidents when you try to park in your own garage!

Doesn’t sport do MORE than disable ASS? I mean it works like ass - what do you expect?

The fix for that is simple. Just leave the thread and don't open it when there's new replies. That's what I do on topics/threads that don't have any value to me.

I find the auto stop/start function on this car to be borderline dangerous. There's no need for it to be so sensitive and shut off the engine while rolling to a stop. I have set a shortcut for it, but that is unacceptable to me. I didn't notice it during the test drive due to it being a warmer day, but I didn't think twice about it because I didn't think it was possible for BMW to mess up something so integral to the driving experience. If I knew I wouldn't have bought it.

If you're in the US I'd suggest file a complaint with NHTSA. Maybe if enough people do it BMW will respond.

Didn't you test drive the vehicle? It's been on the market for a year now...plus, ASS isn't anything new to bmw

Yes I did test drive the vehicle as I noted. It was a warm day so the a/c was keeping the engine on. I know ASS is not new, but this implementation is not good. My F30 330i had a much better system.

I shot a quick clip on a private road. When it switches to Sport Mode the background of the HUD goes to red. Note how the tach on the right jumps when I turn on Sport Mode and then drops a second or two after I go back to Personal Mode.
