I'm seeing iOS 16.2 update is available, so I'm going to download it JIC.

During this process, I also discovered that if you are using Apple Maps (which I almost never do), the map can be displayed in the instrument panel display, but Waze doesn't show (I didn't try Google Maps tho). So I might have to start migrating to Apple Maps after this glitch is cleared up.

I wish this was just a charging dock issue, like OP initially thought, because the dock charges so slow, if I was using my phone for GPS on a longer trip, I'd just plug in to charge anyway.
Apple Maps is actually pretty good now. I was a hardcore Google Maps guy because Apple Maps was so bad when it rolled out, but in most cases here it’s just as good now. Haven’t tried it overseas yet, but Google Maps has been amazing in Japan, even down to which train platform to stand on.

Since - in isolation - this may seem like quackery, I will add further context: the solution was provided by “BMW Genius Advisor”

He called it a “Triple reset” of the iDrive system.

While I had my doubts - it has worked for me so far with several days of problem-free driving.

On another note - I didnt find moving the phone away from the charging dock had any affect at all. Even up on the dashboard - with a clear view of the sky - the GPS was way off.

I found these steps on another forum but how do we power cycle the iDrive on our U11 X1's?

"With the car on, press, and hold the power button for the iDrive system. Hold it until the system turns off, turns back on, turns back off, and turns back on, off again and back on (three cycles).

Then - go to the My BMW app on your iPhone, and use your finger to slide the home screen down, in the same way that you refresh your emails. This will cause the app to re-sync.

Then you’re done."

Thanks

I have iPhone 12 and mine is fine, the car doesn’t accept the BMW app though.

Maybe pushing in on the volume roller switch? On my ‘20 430i the volume knob can be pushed and held to shut off iDrive

Just did the triple reset using the volume roller as suggested. Let's see if that helps.

Thanks

After four days of no errors, I got in my car this morning, put the phone in the charging cradle, and back to the same errors I had before the triple reset.

While it may have been a temporary fix, it is not a long-term fix.

Seems to me that the memories responsible for gps location cache runs out and old data was not cleared timely by the car's os.

I'm hoping this will also fix the issue I've been having with the remote start trial constantly resetting to deactivated in iDrive.

It worked ... for 10 minutes. Then the position jumped 100 feet off the roadway, and was back to where it was before the triple reset. Shoot.

It happens to me when I use google maps on apple CarPlay! So now I only use the bmw nav. I have an iPhone 13 pro. It's so weird. It's a trick to get us to only use bmw nav 😂

So BMW has already decided to discard iD8 in favor of 8.5 and 9. For anyone who’s more electronic/software engineering savvy than me, is it possible that iD8 and it’s Linux head unit may be the problem? It seems to affect enough various Apple devices it’s not an phone issue. Plus both the wife and I’s phones work fine with our 2020 X1 🤷🏻

Can not tell so far since both hardware and software from BMW has changed between 2020 x1 and 2023 x1.

if that's the case, I sure hope that the own up to it and replace the id8 head units for affected owners?

Maybe take it to the dealer three times and if it is still an issue you can claim lemon law...

So much for the triple reset.... It lasted about a day and now it has me driving in fields and rivers... Not acceptable.

it just occurred to me that the problems discussed in this thread is different than what I experienced during the test drives.

when it happened to me, my iPhone 14 Pro Max was in the wireless charging dock. when I noticed that the position was off, I picked it up and threw it on the dash(on that plastic mesh thing behind the screen). the map then became normal ago(both position and heading) I figured it was just the phone not getting the GPS signal.

However, I read most posts in this thread again... are you guys having to reset iDrive8 because the GPS position was forever stuck or lost?

My experience has nothing to do with whether the phone was in the charging dock or not. I saw the issue in and out of the dock, Google Maps and Apple Maps; but Waze worked.
