[QUOTE=bholler;30258496]I had an X1 once. It was terrible.

I only found out after I turned it in at the end of the lease that it was actually built off the Mini platform, which explained a lot.

I had an X1 and loved it! It was the wife’s car. So I mostly drove it when I wasn’t dailying my F80. I was always surprised at how fun and agile it felt. It was properly peppy but did leave me wanting more at the top end. But still surprisingly fun for a small SUV. I personally think it’s countryman underpinnings we’re an asset.

I’m really excited by this new one. Very nice looking and now it’s getting the extra power it deserved all along. Good move by BMW!

- Standard adaptive suspension (option on m340, standard on m240)
- M sport seats (not available on m240 or m340 in NA, which I've never understood, especially since Audi and Merc offer upgraded sport seats in NA)
- M compound brakes (don't think these are an option on m240/m340 from the factory)
- Quad exhausts (I'm all for keeping these reserved for the full M cars, but the aftermarket exhausts for the 240/340 are quad exhausts anyway so what does it really matter)

Also the new steering wheel looks great.

It's just odd to me that this car gets more performance options/specs than the far more sporty m240/m340.
It’s just the latest, I’m sure updates on the 240i are coming

The interior looks great. Pretty funny they slapped the “M” logo on the seats like a true M car.

It's not a "real" adaptive suspension. It's just named that by BMW. This has been discussed at length in other threads.

There is no electronic control or variability that can be adjusted by the driver.

Hopefully it drives better than the base model. When my order came in for one when they first came out and after test driving it, I couldn’t justify paying $42k for sloppy brakes, terrible handling, lack of power and awful steering wheel.

This should correct all of the above, however for $50k+ it might be a bit of a stretch. Looks great though

Pointless upgrade for soccer moms who can’t drive X3 M40i.

An M lite car with 4 banger coz B58 is an overkill.

This will make it into the 2 series and possibly 3 series going forward.
Alfa Romeo, Mini and Mercedes are already doing this on compact crossovers. Why on earth should BMW just give up all those sales to the competition?

What's an AMG version of a GLA cost? Or an upper level Stelvio? Or a loaded Evoque which doesn't even offer an upgraded engine?

this is on the write up on the first post so maybe it is?

Adaptive M suspension and sport steering as standard.

Standard specification for the new BMW X1 M35i xDrive includes BMW’s adjustable Adaptive M Suspension. Pressure peaks inside the dampers are smoothed out with the help of additional valves that are active on the rebound side. As a result, the system offers comfortable response when absorbing minor bumps in the road surface combined with sporty damper characteristics in dynamic driving situations. And the standard sport steering pairs Servotronic speed-sensitive power assistance with a very direct rack ratio.

Never understood why they don't do the ZF8 automatic transmission for this vehicle. Not sure what the limitations are but, based on the reviews I have seen, this one is not as good.

That exact description means it's purely mechanical. Same system in the current X1 with M Sport. If it was electronic I'm sure it would mention so specifically, I think they used to call it Dynamic Damper Control in the past or something similar.

The ZF8 that everyone knows and loves is a RWD only application, this X1 is a FWD based vehicle so no way it would fit. And engine bay would have to be longer to accommodate the longitudinally mounted motor, not to mention sacrificing interior cabin space for the transmission tunnel.

Exactly. BMW is basically using fancy germenglish to try and obfuscate that neither the steering, nor the suspension are anything special.

This is basically lipstick on a pig. And don't get me started about that garish red and black interior.

The only -- maybe unique part about it is the brakes. But I doubt many will be taking a CUV to the track. Who knows though.

A nice way for BMW to milk a little more out of the topend. Always better to have more choices.

I am sure with a few packages, that’s where the average buyer of this new X1 will shake out.

I also wish there wasn’t this “hierarchy” type of approach within the BMW lineup. One nice thing about Porsche is that you can have a 100k base Boxster, or a 100k stripper 718 Spyder if you want to do so. I wish I could pick more options across the lineup and determine what price I am willing to pay.

As cars are constantly growing, I still like the smaller options for a whole host of reasons. Doesn’t mean I want a value menu instead of the full one.

You can have a $40k base X1. But, in its base form, the X1 isn't a performance car. The Boxster / 718 Spyder, in their base forms, are sports cars. So if you just want a basic sports cars, you forego options. If you want a basic lux brand compact crossover, get a base X1.

It kind of is. In the description on the US website, it seems purposely crafted to be ambiguous about explaining exactly how the suspension works. Frequency selective dampers would have been a much more appropriate description.
