Two hour ago, I did the next best thing.(probably very illogical and crazy as well) I was at my BMW dealer and placed an order for the 2024 X1 M35i. Although I bought my X1 from them in April, they knocked $1000 off for no reason. I did not say anything about the price, but the sales manager simply took off $1000 on the order sheet.

My original plan was to drive the X1 for a couple of year and wait for the new X3 to come out... then swap to the X3. My X1 currently has 2600 miles.

Feel free to call me nuts.
based on the way this post originally started, i'd say you saved yourself a lot of time, headache, and money by going this route vs trying to deal with making a 28i into a m35i aesthetically.

when I was looking up the cost to replace all the bumpers, skirts, grills, mirror and other stuff, it was already in excess of $4000.(before painting and installation costs) Not to mention that adding the extra power will be prohibitively expensive, if it's possible at all. That's one of the reasons that ordering the M35i was a much, much cheaper way to do it.

Also, someone in my family(related by marriage) was interested in buying my X1. He offered to pay 90% of the original MSRP when I purchased it back in April and I thought that was more than reasonable. My mileage is currently at 2600 miles and the X1 has the BMW factory 7-year/100k mile Platinum extended warranty.(which normally costs around $3200 to $4000, depending on the dealer)

Don't suppose your relative will care if they receive it without those door sills? I know of a very loving home they could go to...

Pretty sure we can use the same bolts, but I purchased extra just in case. I’ll let you know for sure on the weekend

can't wait to see the pics once you install it. A long time ago, I had an after one installed on the bottom of the front bumper of my 325i. Turned it into a mini snow plow in the winter.

I'm having serious second thoughts about my M35i order. I had a chat with my friend. She has been an insurance agent for almost 30 years. For some strange reason, all the quotes from the major insurance companies will cost me an extra $900 or more per year.

$900 may not sound that much for a whole year, but I'm currently only paying $1160 a year for my X1 xDrive28i. An additional $900 almost doubles my premium.

To be honest, I’m in complete awe (and extremely jealous) of how much better the rates in the US are for insurance.. not to mention the actual cost difference for the cars!

When I had the X1 30e on order, my insurance rate was quoted at €1800 a year (and that’s considered a great offer here). Thankfully, with my iX1, insurance is much less at €920 a year. So I totally understand that 900 extra per year may not seem like much, but it definitely makes a huge difference in comparison.

I had a quick look at the X2 M35i insurance quotes just to estimate what the costs in Austria would be for the X1 M35i and that’s about €2500-3000 a year

Is the insurance the only thing giving you second thoughts on the M35i?

That seems terribly off. I got a quote on my insurance for replacing my 2017 X3 with the new X1 M35 and it was only around $60 more a year. Something doesn't smell right with your insurance...

This is looking extra good! Definitely a very nice upgrade for a small price.

Are you going to place it yourself?

I am. It’s a pretty straight forward task. Unscrew, attach, screw back on. And some 3m tape for good measure

Update on front splitter: I had a quick look to see if the splitter will fit in the original holes. The holes on either side fit in perfectly, but the holes in the middle do not.

Also, if you attach the splitter to the original holes, it will sit much further back than how it’s shown in the photo below, making it barely visible.

I’ve pre-aligned it to match the splitter position as shown on the M35i and it looks much better, but now this means I’ll need to drill holes in the front bumper instead of using what was already available.

Installation will happen tomorrow
