how do I lock the car without the key fob on me?

how do I lock the car without the key fob on me? (or my phone)

I went to lunch with my co-workers earlier. After we came down from the office building, we walked past my car. I noticed that the doors were unlocked(door pin up). I did not have my key fob or my phone with me, since I was going to lunch. I tried the lock button on the doors and the tailgale. They didn't respond. I never realized they didn't work without the key fob on me.

Since the parking lot in front of my office building was gated, I decided to forget it and went to lunch. When I came back an hour later, I took my phone out and locked it using the app.

Is there a way around this?

You could always open the door and hit the lock button from the inside The outside buttons only work if your key is within proximity.

was there some reason that BMW changed to doors with no door pins?

how can you tell if the doors are locked or unlocked while standing outside?

OP, I don’t know which idrive version you have but in idrive 8 with comfort access I can set the the vehicle to lock when walking away, this is in the doors and windows app.

Because no one looks at or uses the door pins anyway. Pull the door handle if you are unsure if the car is locked.

My wife's Hyundai has the door lock "pins" on the inside door panel, by the door handle pull--so you can't "see" if the door is locked without peering inside the cabin. It's just like manufacturers eliminating the physical key door lock slot on the passenger side door once key fobs became commonplace. Cutting costs of a feature that no longer serves any practical purpose.

Not having door pins on 24 X1
is no issue/problem for me. My 2019 Acura RDX, which I got in late 2018, does not have them & it never bothered me at all.

I find it interesting that a lot of people who buy the X1(U11) previously had Acura and Honda SUVs. Is this just a coincidence or are there things that attract those owners to the X1?

I’ve had 3 Acura’s
2010 TSX owned about 3 years
2014 RDX AWD owned about 4 years
2019 RDX AWD currently have for 6 years

My Acura SUVs are reliable & drive/drive well but I was ready for something with a bit more sportiness. I began Researching the X1 during July 2023 & waited for the 24’s to become available before pulling the trigger.

Back in 2013 when I was considering an SUV I thought BMW’s interiors were boring When I was looking again in 2018, I had the same option. But when I saw the 2023 x1 & reviewed the tech, my viewpoint changed. I finally got the Chance to test ride one & I became a 1st time BMW owner.

small/medium Acura SUVs are not cheap these days, when compared to similar offerings from BMW. I seriously looked at a couple of Acura and Lexus SUVs before buying the X1. For the same or a little more money, I could have gotten the new X1... so I did.

I always just check my cars have tucked their ears in (mirrors) when walking away.

I make sure it's specced on all my cars for that very reason. Quick glance and you know it's locked.

I've had electric folding mirrors on all of my cars in the last 30 years.(since 1995) However, I've never had to use them. Not really useful in the US, at least not in my area because the streets and parking lots are wide. The only time I've use them was for fund, just to show my friends that my mirrors could be folded in via a switch.

That's in sharp contrast to the few years that I lived in Europe. I've had to fold my mirrors in on a daily basis. Sometimes I even had to fold the mirrors so I could drive through narrow streets.

I find it useful when parking both cars in a two-car garage and in some parking garages.

I wrote this when I wasn’t around my car. Now that I’ve checked, my car still doesn’t have door pins.

Don't know the reason but I suspect cost and possibly aesthetics.

I usually hit the lock button on the remote when leaving which folds in the mirrors so that's one "indication" or check the mobile app. However, the only way to know if the doors are locked is to physically try them without the key in your possession.
