ID8*
I meant to say I wonder if this means the car is equipped with the ID8, and if the newest builds will say ID9 on their manual.

Is there any way to check our X1s to determine this?

Reading the thread, iX1 does have the augmented reality navigation so must have the MGU4+? Just a question as to whether BMW will offer updates over the air or via dealer. My money would be on not offering upgrades.

Built in November? 100% iD8.

Mine was built in March/April. I was wondering if anyone has a newer VIN number and can check the car manual (from the app) to see if it says 8.5 or even ID9.

My car finished being built a week ago. Checked the Navigation/Entertainment/Communication manual in the app. Footer of the TOC indicates US ID8.

ID8.5 will NOT begin coming to the X1 in any form under current plans. The Android based ID9 will be coming to some cars in the UK at the moment and then other markets later in the year.

I think I saw in another forum suggesting that BMW models that have augmented reality navigation already have the MGU4+. Because of the extra processing power required. Is that true?

I will be ordering a 2023 X1 and will be happy with iDrive 8. Likely have Apple CarPlay up the majority of the time anyways. It is fascinating to read all the rumours and speculation.
I wonder if there is a way to check for that? I have an ID8 system that does have the AR Navi…

So many mixed replies here! So in a nut shell no one really knows the answer.

It seems the safest answer right now is that you either get 8 or 9 on the X1 depending on your location (UK/IRL = 9 for petrol and diesel) but also that 8.5 is not necessarily going to be downloaded onto existing cars with 8.

Is this 100% correct? Impossible to say but it’s what seems to be suggested by comments from decent sources. I read that by the end of May BMW is expected to put out a press release to give some clarity to this issue.

ID8.5 like ID9 needs new hardware, if you have ID8 now that is all you are going to get simple as that, not upgradable.

It seems the X1 and 2 series will get ID9 and other cars like the 7 series, 5 series etc. that have a physical idrive controller will get 8.5.

ID9 will come on the X1 in the UK now for all new petrol and diesel cars and rest of world and PHEV / iX1 from November.

See all sorted, no ambiguity.

I just ordered my 2023 X1 today knowing I will be stuck at iDrive 8. Would I like iDrive 8.5? Yes. Only time will tell what happens to 2023 X1 owners. If BMW does OTA updates for other models from 8 to 8.5 with compatible hardware but leaves 2023 X1's out that would be a slap in the face.

I have read in other forums that suggest if the car has the HGU4+ then it might be capable of running 8.5. They should just clear it up.

This is the one piece of speculation that would make sense to me as to why X1s cannot upgrade to iD8.5
