1st time washing X1. kick-to-open liftgate hit me in the head and knocked me over.

this is more or less a PSA

after a week with my new X1, I gave it a nice car wash yesterday evening. when I was done drying off most of the car with my car blower, I backed it into the garage because it was starting to get dark.

while I was drying it off, I ran the towels over the rear bumper(the black part on the M Sport bumper). I was wearing my airpods and didn't hear the beeping warning.

next thing I knew, the lift gate came up and knocked m on my face. I had not place to duck because the X1 was already a couple of feet from the wall, I fell on the garage floor. I realized what had happened as soon as I hit the floor.

while I was wiping the bumper, the towels must have been underneath the bumper and the sensor thought it was my food. it activated the liftgate and opened it. since I couldn't hear it or see the flashing lights, I kind of deserved it. I have only myself to blame.

well.. the good news is that my new X1 is now as clean as the day I took delivery a week ago.

I don't think it beeps when opening. Only when you close by kicking, I believe.

in my case, my new X1 "kicked" me. that was what it felt like to me. I deserved it.. justifiable karma? on the first day, I kicked too hard while trying the kick-to-open tailgate and I actually kicked the rear bumper a little hard.

that was 7 days ago, so I guess the X1 believes in the old saying "revenge is a dish best served cold"

Good to know. I think I will just make sure I'm not in possession of the key when cleaning/drying the back of the car.

The current X1/X3 only bleeps when you kick to close, a number of times as above they have suddenly closed when I didn’t think I’ve activated it. You have to grab it quick to stop it!!

I just tested it and it indeed did not beep when using kick to open. (only flashing the lights)

Interestingly, I also found the following text in the owner's manual:

Movement in range of the sensors may cause
unintended opening of the cargo area, for in-
stance due to water running down when clean-
ing the vehicle or with heavy rainfall.

Is BMW saying that if I'm sitting in the car while in the automatic brushless car wash(gear in P), there's a chance that the tailgate will open due to the water or foam flying below the rear bumper?

Nope. Must differ by country. I just tried it and it doesn't beep for kick to open. And it definitely doesn't beep with the fob or with the button on the driver's door or on the rear door. Only kick to close for me.
