what is that foot-long cutout for on the inside of the liftgate?

what is that foot-long cutout for on the inside of the liftgate?

you know the old saying... when one door closes, another one opens?

well, in my case, it was more like when one liftgate opens and knocks you over, you notice a mysterious foot-long cutout on the inside of the liftgate which was what happened when I was on the floor staring up at the attacking liftgate.
https://u11.bimmerpost.com/forums/sh....php?t=2014619

is something missing from there or does the cutout serve some other function?

Thanks!

It’s not included as standard equipment on most BMWs in the US. ECS Tuning sells the triangles, but I think there might be an additional bracket on Euro models missing on our cars needed to keep it in place. Maybe someone in the UK or EU can post a photo of what it looks like with the triangle removed?

Was also checking with dealer when changing tires couple of weeks ago and applying airbag remedy. It took them 3 hours to figure out and do some calls - final result, in Canada it is not included. So will continue to be empty niche.

how does it not fall out? does it fit tightly in there or do you have to install some clips/brackets? thanks!

It just slides in there no additional clamps needed.

You are required to have a road flare in japan . Usually small enough to fit in glove box.
