Delivery Day here in Japan

Picked up my 20i M Sport in Storm Bay. Coming from a 2020 GLA 200d this X1 is more fun for sure. I guess I am #9 for delivered new X1’s in the Yokohama Area of Japan.

Looks good, others have looked at the GLA as an alternative, share any other insight would be good for those that are considering both.

The GLA feels softer, more mature adult kind of car, where the X1 feels a bit more youthful.

The heads up display on the X1 is very sharp and something MB wasn’t doing in the GLA.

The GLA is a good car, but the X1 now has some newer tech.

Congrats! It looks good.
I wonder why US spec M package cars don't get that M badge on the side fender.

GLA AMG steering wheel is better. Paddle shifters also feel more legit. The X1 Paddle shifters almost feel like an afterthought.

GLA does have more configurability in the instrument cluster, overall the larger screen and amount of voice commands makes me prefer ID8 over MBUX.

The GLA has more ambient light choices and colors if you are someone who changes it often. They also have more overall ambient light since it runs throughout the vents and more of the interior. I usually set it and forget it running a purple or lavender color.

After I placed my X1 order, I went next door to cancel the GLA order. I honestly loved how the X1 looked.

Anyway, I just realized why your Japanese X1 looked so good. It's the headlight! The headlight is a much cleaner look without the mandatory amber thing in headlights for the US.

There is also no M badge on the front fenders. I wonder how I can get those in the US. I'm not sure why they didn't want us to have it, but kept the M doorsills, as well as the "M" on the wheels and steering wheel.

Never really noticed the amber in the headlight until you pointed it out… why does the US require that? Do your Daytime LEDs not blink amber?

It’s been like that since at least the 80’s, where there needs to be an amber reflector on the front corners of the car to reflect light in the US. Nothing to do with turn signal indicators or anything, just an added safety measure I guess so you can see the car when it’s lights aren’t on I guess lol. The DRL’s still flash amber like the rest of the world. Also, our rear turn signals blink red and not amber on current BMWs

time sure flies, so I've been ranting about the amber reflector for well over 40 years? can't count how many ways I've been covering them up over the years on at least 10 cars. spray paint and reflective tape to match body color were the cheap methods. Then there were the half a dozen complete headlight or turn signal housing that I ordered from Germany, where there are no silly amber reflectors, but I guess the German drivers are less safe because of it?

unfortunately, my X1 will have to stay like that because I was quoted well over US$3250 to replace them with German-spec headlight housings.

By the way, I'm not sure about the amber color DRL. I'm 99% sure that my X1's DRL LEDs light up white. Will have to go downstairs during lunch break to check it out. Unless there's a way to use my phone's BMW app to turn on the lights and take a picture with the front exterior camera?

The DRLs are white in all markets, they flash amber when indicating though.

I looked in the manual and didnt' find an answer. Do you know if it's possible to disable the DRL while the X1 is parked with the engine running? For example, sitting in a parking spot after dark with the engine running and waiting for someone? Thanks!

You can disable the DRLs in the menu, I have mine set that way. If you’re talking about just turning off the lights while parked, there’s an Off button on your dash under the air vent. They’ll come back on if you press the Auto button, or automatically next time you start the car.

They are dual function, they illuminate white but will flash amber when using the turn signals or hazard indicator.

I hate non-amber turn signals... It's actually pretty dumb when you think about it and you would figure the US would be onboard in the name of safety....

Same here. On my e90 I actually brought back a set of tail lights I found at Up Garage in Machida lol. Lucked out, otherwise I would’ve bought a set at 5x the price on eBay. If I can find decent pricing on a set of tails for the X1 I may replace them as well.
