Our 23 X1 just arrived to the dealership. Does it make sense to just wait a few more months and place an order for MY24? We’re not in a rush…dealer said MY24 production will begin in 3-5 months.

We know MY24 will include iDrive 9…any other meaningful changes?

Concern is that we get one of the last MY23s that is stuck on iDrive 8, takes a hit on depreciation, etc.

Pros/cons of waiting?

It’s a crap shoot either way. Buy now and maybe don’t get iDrive 9, or buy later and face the possibility of BMW discontinuing an option you really want. Being a first year redesign I don’t anticipate any major changes…maybe a shuffling of colors, software updates to address throttle issues that some owners are experiencing, fine tuning the assembly process. I’m hoping that dealers will get more X1s on the lot as they continue to be a rarely seen sight in my area.

Oh, and the new M version of the X1 should make an appearance in MY 24 as well.

Prices are likely to go up, with the X2 releases capacity for the X1 potentially reduced and if the X3 is anything to go by they removed not add features after the first year of the LCI.

So careful what you wish for as above if you like the car as it is take it now. ID9 vs ID8 I doubt many used buyers will care a jot about.

I ordered my X1 in August; took delivery in mid-December. I have no reason to believe order times will be any shorter for '24 models. Who knows when '24 ordering will open. So if OP is willing to wait that long, and *hope* that any changes will be for the better, go for it.

If you need a vehicle now, take the 23 X1 you ordered. If not, pass and wait for the 24. That’s what I’m doing, no immediate need to get into any vehicle.

Faced the same choice, got the 23. Idrive 9 won’t be on the first 24 models, only starting in November. Seems like BMW is having teething issues with it (delays to UK models). And it requires some kind of data subscription to fully function. Plus price increases likely, possibility of options dropping (our order has a lot of options), decided to go now.

Take delivery of your vehicle that arrived at the dealer and enjoy! Don't base a purchase decision on tech that will not change how the vehicle performs and frankly, the differences between 8 & 9 won't be super noticeable, at least not enough to delay at least 8 months, minimum for a '24 (even though you're not in a rush). There'll be zero hit on depreciation based on version 8 vs 9. You're overthinking it...pick-up your '23

Judging by current production vs demand, you may be waiting for a while. If you have no problem waiting for 10-12 months AND you really want ID9, then wait. I'm sure there will be other very minor differences between the model years, but that could go either way. Like others said, some features could be removed or get more expensive.

Personally, I don't like the look of ID9 and would not rather have a map be the startup screen every time I get in the car. Once I got used to the new car, ID8 is very easy to use and works very well. Zero regrets here.

And, might be relevant to some that are, will be the reduced trade in value of their existing car by delaying for a 24 model.

IMHO, the best time to buy a new car is when the new updated model comes out, like the current 3rd gen U11 X1. For those of us who took delivery within the last several months, the X1 will still be a fresh "new" car for the next 5 to 7 year, until BMW releases the 4th gen X1.

The worst time to buy is buy cars at the end of their production run. You buy it and two months later, a new one comes out.

(yes, I do realize that as with anything, the new, updated models may have more issues that need to be worked out)

Conventional wisdom says not to buy a car in its 1st MY, due to inevitable glitches and kinks. The airbag recall is a prime example. iDrive 8/8.5/9 maybe too. But I was in the market for this type of vehicle and was willing to take the risk and order one sight unseen.

I agree I would be hesitant to get a car in its last MY, but for non-car people, and non-tech oriented people, it may present them with an opportunity for a great deal.

Airbag was 1 hour of work with no impact on anything. I got same Airbag issue + rear springs replacement + battery on "most reliable" Honda and it was restyle model so "lesson learnt" story should've expected. Not that bat for new BMW.

absolutely! the best deals are always available a month or two before the updated model shows up at dealerships! (even better if they happen to have the previous generation still sitting on the lot after the new generation cars are already on the dealer's lot)

If I'm in the market for my own private fighter jet, I certainly don't want the F-16(trouble-free, still rolling off the assembly line at Fort Worth, but old enough to qualify for an antique license plate in my state)... get me a brand-spanking-new F-35A(loaded with issues, of course)
