Ok so lots of talk that everyone wants ID9 sure, but what about those on ID8, well we could get 8.5 in the end, possible, maybe, hopefully.

Well here is a demo of what its going to look like and ID9 is going to looks the same or very similar. Take away a smaller screen and take a look at this.

BMW Idrive 8.5 Demo in an I7

Just to update at the end of the video he says 8.5 will come to all Linux based cars and 9.0 will come to Android.

However, read the article and ...... NO ID8.5 at all for existing owners as this ALSO needs a new head unit. So no over the air update AT all despite saying so before I believe. Ah well never mind.

ID9 will be 2 series Active Tourer and X1 only for the time being.

Despite seeing posts to the contrary on this forum I have yet to get any official confirmation that iDrive 9 has begun rollout for X1 ICE vehicles in the UK. Yesterday an online Genius chat confirmed there was no update for the rollout to begin.
I wonder why different people are getting a different response from BMW Genius?

You may be right because despite emailing and phoning several times over the past week I can’t get a reply re id9. It was “supposed” to be on my order, and was described as having id9 but I’m beginning to wonder now…

At the end of the day I don’t really care what comes with it seeing as I tested it several times with id8 amd was perfectly happy with it (knowing that no system is perfect). Also i’d rather not be a guinea pig!

My build is specified as being dependent upon it having ID9. So I could have a long wait....

I was told it was for mid April builds for mid to late May deliveries and mine would be one of the first. BUT let’s see, mine is due towards end of May and not sure I will know until it’s here!.

Just looked at the BMW UK brochure and it lists the info below now for those interested. Top bit is all standard, and then interestingly some of the enhanced features it seems is part of a subscription...?!? So don't know how much that is but not sure I'd pay extra I'd just use Apple Car play or others Android.

Standard Equipment
Live Cockpit Plus, comprising:
- 10.25” Digital Instrument Display
- 10.70” Touch Control Display
- 4G LTE Connectivity
- Bluetooth® wireless charging / WiFi interface
- BMW Operating System 8.0 (PHEV)
- BMW Operating System 9.0 (Petrol/Diesel)
- Intuitive Operation
- Remote Software Upgrade
- Tuner with diversity reception

DAB Radio
MyModes
Stereo System with six speakers
Widescreen Display
Wireless Charging (M Sport)

BMW Operating System 8.0
BMW Operating System 8.0 and BMW Live Cockpit Plus are both included as standard for BMW X1 Electric and Plug-in Hybrid models. A high resolution curved touch display and configurable widgets showing real time information as well as navigation and Bluetooth connection are just some of the useful features available with this system.

BMW Operating System 9.0
Standard for BMW X1 petrol and diesel models, the new BMW Operating System 9 features a curved display that can be operated by touch or activated by voice using the BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant. The intuitive menu bar and interactive widgets have been curated so it makes sure you have everything you need for each journey whether you are planning for your next trip, checking live traffic situations or listening to your favourite playlist.

Optional Extra features for ID9
BMW DIGITAL PREMIUM.

In tandem with BMW Operating System 9 on petrol and diesel models, the optional BMW Digital Premium service provides customers with upgraded digital connectivity features such as unlimited data, enhanced personalisation, maps and route guidance. There is also a wider digital library of third-party apps, including entertainment apps (e.g Spotify, Amazon Music etc) which can include in-car gaming operated when stationary. Activated via the Connected Drive store, BMW Digital Premium delivers the ultimate support for each and every journey.

BMW Digital Premium is a paid subscription service. Some functionality requires a network connection.

Part of me always wants the latest and greatest, but after watching the video for the most part I actually prefer ID8's interface. The only things that caught my attention are the faster voice recognition and the possibility of playing games in my car (which I find both cool and useless at the same time). ID8 has been working mostly flawless for me, the only glitches being CarPlay occasionally disconnecting in one certain spot I drive frequently (which seems to have gone away).

I won't fault anyone for wanting ID9, but personally if I was ordering a car soon I wouldn't have waited specifically to get ID9.

I’d add that I spent several hours with id8 learning it, so I’ll have lost that advantage if mine turns up with id9!

Was updated this morning that build is due week commencing May 8th. Pic attached showing id9

You'd have thought Someone at BMW could provide an update.

I think as far as that screen shot is from the BMW system it can be taken that id9 is what it is being built with.

BMW had a great invention in programmable buttons, got them in my car and the wife's, they jus work. Radio stations, Call someone, certain view on sat-nav one press done. Ditto Idrive, everyone hated it at the beginning, its evolved got really good so they take it away on the 2 series AT and X1 as a test, see how it goes.

They like the article says made a mistake, will likely be in some LCI cars they revert where possible and add some back in maybe. VW have already done the same and with non touch sensitive buttons and moving to physical ones.

Buttons will not be returning en masse imo, this is the new future and the younger generations who will turn into the new core buyers won’t want tbem anyways. You need to embrace it, and tbh once you set everything up and familiarise yourself they are not difficult to use.

Please...I have zero issues with technology...but this stuff does not belong in a car. It's taken years to get mobile phones banned whilst driving...and peeps think this is ok?....nah...entitled to your opinion naturally but time will tell...

...it's not a "youth" feature 😂

Absolutely it’s just my opinion and yes time will tell 👍 You cannot deny that screens, gestures and voice activation are the present and this will only get more so down the line in all walks of life in the future. Sure they could be better integrated but this is relatively early in the switch so will massively improve.

Ummm...BMW dropped gesture control.

Also, I believe VW are the largest automotive manufacturer in the world and they're making the decision to abandon these insanely large screens that control nearly every aspect of in-car management...and voice control is way off from being an effective tech....

Buttons baby, buttons

OR...voice activated controls that actually worked...then no requirement for a touchscreen, correct?

But then again, I've owned many BMWs and they still haven't managed to get voice controls right...it's better mind you, but still not there yet

I doubt physical buttons will return, but can see "adjustments" being made to the user interface. As indeed 8.5 and 9 purport to do.

Do you expect to see the return of the iPhone button? Do you envisage phones and tablets being offered with a Mouse?

I think it is an age thing. I'm old, but a techie so I adapt to such change easily. Having said that my preference would be to have minimal functionality in cars as I just love driving. My worst nightmare is the car driving me, deciding when it should brake or change direction!

Do you think this layout was easy to use? And that was when a high tech car meant it didn't leak in the rain, probably.
