I read several threads about the whole iDrive 8, 8.5 and 9 and it's still not clear due to contradicting information released by BMW.

My current understanding is that X1s out in the field right now using iDrive 8 will be updated to iDrive 8.5.

Production starting from Q2/23 will have iDrive 9 - and obviously with the new headunit.

But what happens with the current production? Would a scenario where the new headunit is in place but currently only runs an android-based iDrive 8, later to be updated to iDrive 9? Would a scenario like this be viable?

My iX1 built mid-April will only be ID8 apparently.

According to the recent post with the video from BMWblog, existing ID8 cars would not be able to get an upgrade to 8.5 due to differences in hardware:

Quote:
The next model to get iDrive 8.5 is the 2024 5 Series Sedan (G60), scheduled to premiere in the coming weeks. Based on our knowledge, BMW intends to start production of the i4, iX, X5, X6, X7, and 7 Series with iDrive 8.5 from July 2023. The latest Operating System requires a new head unit, therefore it won’t be offered as an over-the-air update for existing models.

...however, reading some posts in this very forum, some X1s being produced now already have iDrive 9 headunit...

Yes, there was info published saying ID9 would be in certain X1 trims starting in April production. Looks like the X1 is skipping over 8.5 entirely. 2024MY X1's going forward will all have ID9.

Is it based on certain trims or certain markets? I am worried because my order is not in production yet, but I'd have it to have non-upgradable id8 when I get it. Is there any more information on this topic?

I believe in one of the other threads, pure petrol based models are getting it first, PHEV and iX1 will get it at a later date. I'm based in the US, so maybe one of the UK or European members can clarify further.

Like I said, I'm not sure. I'm in the USA, so we only get one engine here and no idea when we will get ID9. It's probably best if you contact your dealer or BMW directly. Even in the US just a couple months after launch they added options originally not available when I ordered. I was under the impression that I would be able to add heated seats via the Connected Drive store after purchase if I wanted but that doesn't seem to be the case in the US, neither is adding Driving Assistant Pro (which wasn't available when I ordered).

If this is BMW's new way of doing things, it's very confusing.

Well then what's the point? Why roll out 8.5 AND 9 if iD8 vehicles can't be upgraded to 8.5?

Lol, no idea. I mean, they could be wrong as the video says conflicting information compared to the article. I mean it's possible that we will get 8.5, but lacking the improved voice recognition speed or something that the current processors can't handle. Who knows at this point with BMW, I've seen options differ between other markets, but I don't recall significant mid year changes, they usually save that for the LCI.

ID 8.5 (Linux) has new hardware and specifically a new voice processor that allows for far more accurate voice detection. They have also added this new quick route element. It will NOT be coming to the current ID8 models with that functionality, will they make some UI changes maybe but not extra functionality.

ID9 has similar apparently on interface and also potentially improved voice detection. ID9 also has new capabilities that are going to be part of a premium subscription so some of the great 'extras' are going to cost the customer, this is BMW nothing comes free!

ID 8 isn't limited to the X1, many other models are going to suffer from this upgrade shortfall, you still get the UI and capabilities that you bought the car with and for, just not some of the new capabilities that they are now rolling out. It's like saying I want the new hardware in a new phone but you own the old one unfortunately.

Rollout of ID9 for the X1 in the US / EU outside of just the ICE cars in the UK appears to be later in the year Oct / Nov from what BMW seems to point at. Don't believe anyone has an ID9 car yet but some are built and on the way to customers.

If you download the X1 brochure for your specific country it should tell you the idrive version in that, the UK brochure is saying ID9 for diesel and petrol, electric and Phev get ID 8 at the moment

I wouldn't trust the brochures found online in Greece... they aren't even written in our native language, at least the ones found online. There's no list of features like the one mentioned above, only mentioned in the photo brochure catalog, as iDrive 8...

IMHO, having 2 different head units on the same production line will only lead to some units getting the wrong HU. Even though a specific build calls for a particular part, that doesn't guarantee that it will be built as specified. Take it from me, I've experienced just that with BMW.

Could be that it's a supply chain issue from the HU manufacturer or else why not roll out ID9 for all the X1s?

my X1 is currently on a ship to the US. However I have the VIN number. So I downloaded BMWs driving guide app and got a copy of my manual. On the owners manual, page 5, near the bottom it mentioned "US English ID8 11/23" . I wonder if that means my car is equipped with ID as well...

I wonder if newer builds show ID9 there??

Yes, your car is equipped with iDrive. All BMWs have had iDrive for many years.

Do 2023 X1’s have the MGU4 or MGU4+ head unit?

I think I saw in another forum suggesting that BMW models that have augmented reality navigation already have the MGU4+. Because of the extra processing power required. Is that true?

I will be ordering a 2023 X1 and will be happy with iDrive 8. Likely have Apple CarPlay up the majority of the time anyways. It is fascinating to read all the rumours and speculation.
