Impressed by BMW's Navigation Notifications

On a recent long drive along interstate 95 in the North East I was impressed by several kinds of notifications that came up on the drivers & center screens. Each one showed up about a mile before what it was alerting about & continued showed the distance as it got closer.
To name a few:
REST AREA AHEAD
CONSTRUCTION AHEAD
ROAD NARROWS AHEAD
POT HOLE AHEAD
SLOWER TRAFFIC AHEAD

I also like the live front camera (back of mirror) that kicks in when approaching a critical turn or complicated area ahead.

My 2019 Acura RDX has no such notifications. BMW does it better.

Has anyone come across other alerts?

The key question, especially on I-95 in the Northeast, is how is the traffic data? I just don't see how it could be as good as Waze.

Also - the BMW nav tried to take me into a side construction entrance at a hotel resort (the resort wasn't new and wasn't under construction - some new subdivision was being built around the golf course). It also tried to take me out of the resort the same way.

I can read rest area signs - I don't need my nav to tell me there's one coming up in a mile. I need it to get me to my destination (all the way, not almost all the way), and avoid traffic. I haven't found any factory nav that does this as well as Waze or Google Maps.

Tex2670- you sound like you want to argue the virtues of BMW’s on board Navigation against using another one such as Waze or Google. I’m not weighing one against another I’m just saying I’m impressed with BMW’s ID9’s integrated system.

Even with CarPlay, the data showing on the 2 screens & the HUD are better when using the internal system than with others on my phone.

And yes the traffic along my route was fairly accurate.

One point you made which I do agree with is all navigation apps & or navigation systems occasionally take you in some weird routes.

I only object to the fact that the BMW navigation map updates will cost money after the first 4 years.

Didn't know that. Must have been in the fine print.

I’ve had my 2024 x1 28i since late December 23 & the OTA map has updated in March already. I’ve read that previous map updates typically come several times a year in an attempt to keep current. BTW I’ve noticed at least new 2 local businesses which opened in late 2023 are now within the latest map. That’s impressive. 👍

In comparison, my 2019 Acura I bought during the Summer of 2018 took until 2020 to get an update which was a cumbersome process to obtain. Whatever was updated at that time was not noticeable in my area & many business in my area that closed 5 years back were still showing. 👎 I recall that another free map update became available a year or so after that which was several months before their window for free updates ended. Because of app issues I was not able to download it. When communicating to their customer service of the issue they did not immediately reply & by the time they did the free window had passed & they insisted I pay for the map. I did not.

I do not know the price for BMW’s map updates but if I find it excessive at that time I guess I’ll keep the one I have & I’ll use one of the apps in my phone instead.

Meh. How often do roads materially change if you live in a populated area? Again, navigation apps are superior in so many ways and are free, so if the roads do change, I'd just use those.

Apple Maps can project in the IP screen/HUD or the infotainment screen.

I don't think this applies to ID9. The maps are cloud based, there is no download like the past systems.

on ID9 is map update for free (we will see in future if BMW will not change it), but on older system you have to pay for USB update

thanks to the hundreds of billions of new money courtesy of the infrastructure law, there will be many new roads, highways and bridges. in my state alone, over 800 houses, farms and commercial buildings(including the roads that they were on) have been erased from existence. The state and federal monies are hard at working building several new highways and 3 bridges.

I do agree that Apple Maps is far superior to most factory built-in navigation systems, including the BMW one.

The only navigational "warning" I like and use/pay attention to is the speed limit sign that flashes when I'm over the limit - although sometimes I feel like my X1 is being a nag about it!

I turned that off because it would be flashing 100% of the time

I’d pay a premium connect fee for the “pothole ahead” option….

Clearly not a thing in the U.K. but needed……
